Let's add that he used the team's top pick on quarterbacks in back to back drafts as well, so I really don't get the notion that he drafts with any sort of long-term plan in mind. Marty Hurney is unquestionably the worst general manager in the NFL, and quite possibly the worst in professional sports.

 

I get it, Hurney's a shit GM, but that's the type stuff you'd completely rip on someone about, in almost any other situation. There's no doubt that you yourself could count a number of future-looking draft picks that could also be self-serving and disastrous.

 

As multiple people have pointed out, Hurney has repeated examples of drafting the same position in either consecutive drafts or twice over three years. There really isn't any evidence whatsoever that there has been any sort of coherent plan.

 

Hurney himself has said that he pretty much "goes with the flow" on draft day.

I've pointed that out myself, re: QB and WR. And, I'm not arguing that he's done a good job. Fucking hear that already. But I am saying, he's drafted with more than just the current year in mind, and even suggested that it hasn't necessarily worked out. No idea why this is such a contentious point.

Are we just guilty of going BPA or does Marty see our scouting department like the Steelers, were good at IDing LB's and RB's?

That Otah trade up really was an endless cockup whose ripples still cease to end.

When Foxy was a lame duck, we really shoulda targeted linemen that any HC we were targeting could use. Marty probably believed he fallen into an Aaron Rodgers situation with Jimmy. In fairness, I didnt think he'd struggle that bad either but he was a QB that was gonna need time to mature, physically and mentally.

Then you look at the Revis/Beason/Kalil deal.

 

I'll give you an example since you're doing this for whatever reason. Everette Brown. Definitely wasn't a place we had a hole, definitely doesn't make any sort of Pro-Hurney case. I mean, no level of objectivity can say that Hurney has never looked past the immediate year.

 

Que? Everette Brown was drafted specifically to replace Peppers, and at that time it wasn't clear if they were going to trade him or not before that final season (which they should have). That was filling an immediate need, not long-term planning. The only "long-term" pick I can think of was Armanti Edwards. Pretty much everything else has been reactionary to immediate needs or chaotic obsession with a particular player.

 

I think we did a pretty good job this year. Time will tell. That Alexander trade kinda sucks but whatever.
