The results on the field weren't as bad as the decisions in the front office, and Fox deserves some credit for that. I obviously would have preferred it if JR had cleaned house completely. Surely there are some young hotshot GM candidates in the NFL like I keep hearing about it major league baseball.

Ok. Good points I can't argue with facts. I still believe 9 out of 10 GMs wouldn't have gambled on Newton at #1, but I guess when your days may be numbered you take those risks. When we do replace Hurney, which is inevitable, I hope it's some one like Atlanta's GM.

Glad he gambled on Newton. Credit meatpile for being the only one who was sure. I was right behind him, but I struggled with wanting us to draft Green, which in hindsight, with no QB, was pretty retarded. Thank God I was never with the Orton crowd.

But so far Newton is panning out. So far.

I'd like to see better mechanics, and him be able to contain himself a little better after a loss. I'd like to see more leading, and I'd like to see him not fall apart with nerves when he has to march down for a winning score, because so far this kid aint no comeback kid.

That being said, he's our MVP right now. It's easy to do, when your OC only puts the ball in your hands, but still, he's our MVP. I'm a Cam Junkie. I love the guy. But this book hasn't been written yet. I'm still nervous. Just really like what I see so far.

not saying they were even gambling with this pick, but its a lot easier to gamble when your team has a certain amount of stability, and an enormous amount of stability is possible with the right QB in place. There's no better example of that than Indy.

Our biggest problem under Fox was developing skill players on offense. We missed on some picks, for sure, but there surely could have been better ways to bring along Jarrett, Colbert, & Clausen (obviously). The reason Foxy liked vets so much is cause he didnt have to train them. He wouldnt even play the young defensive backs, which was his wheelhouse. Moose & Smitty were already here when he got here, plus Smitty's development had more to do with the rage in his soul than anything else. The TE's werent even an afterthought. DeAngelo didnt even fully turn it on till Testaverde convinced him to get in better shape. Clausen was obviously a disaster. Foxy was never gonna build anything for the future on offense, he's a guy that knew how to win games and who emphasized toughness, and Hurney enabled him, giving him what he needed for the purpose of maximizing next years win total, rather than planting the seeds of a growing & evolving offense. Of course, hindsight's 20-20, but anybody wanna guess how different Foxy's career might have been if that little punt returner we reached for in the 3rd round of the '01 draft was never on his team?

Pretty sure JR decreed we were taking a QB with the #1, soon after we ended up with it.

Someone said he told them that, or he said he told someone that. Maybe Smitty.

edit: and why in the hell would Hurney argue over trading a pick, it's his favorite thing to do. Hmmm, maybe he wanted to trade a player and JR said no.

    that's awesome.

I don't think it changes that much. It's too successful to dismiss, but it's too early to say it's successful. I can't deny that I feel better that he's doing what he's doing, back foot and all that, and doing it at 300+ yards/60% and 2 TD per game averages good, than if he was doing the same back foot shit and doing it at 170 yards, 45% 'good'.

For me the greater concern is how the 09 draft went from being a bunch of potential to a shitload of shitloads. That worries me. That portions of the '11 draft makes obsolete most of the '10 draft makes me feel almost as bad.
