this solidifies a top-10 recruiting class. he's announcing tonight. fsu beat out cincinnati, uconn, indiana, kentucky -- everybody. i'd say this recruiting class ranks as no. 2 in the acc -- hell, maybe it's better than duke's. :) leonard hamilton, kicking ass again...

and it makes it easier for Carolina to get Linas Klieza... he was considering FSU too, but now that they get the Ex Georgia guy ...then Klieza will probably go to UNC due to lack of room in the FSU frontcourt

That died down after Doh was let go. I think you are talking about Watkins, but Roy was never considering him.

    6-foot-10 star boosts recruiting class

By Josh Robbins | Sentinel Staff Writer
    Posted May 15, 2003

TALLAHASSEE -- Prep basketball star Alexander Johnson announced Wednesday night that he will attend Florida State, a decision that boosts the Seminoles' already strong 2003 recruiting class.

A 6-foot-10 forward, Johnson said FSU was attractive partly because he will have an opportunity to help build the school's basketball program, which has endured five consecutive losing seasons.

Johnson also cited Tallahassee's proximity to his home in Albany, Ga., and FSU Coach Leonard Hamilton as reasons for his decision.

"He's kind of like a father," Johnson said of Hamilton. "He'll talk to you about personal things, about life.

"He's rebuilding the program and I really wanted to be a part of it."

Florida State, which finished 14-15 last season, now has its best recruiting class in years. The Seminoles had already signed McDonald's All-American Von Wafer and a pair of highly regarded junior-college players, 6-10 post player Diego Romero and 6-6 forward Antonio Griffin.

The RivalsHoops.com Web site rates Johnson as the 16th-best player in the 2003 recruiting class, while Johnson is ranked 28th in the Prep Stars Recruiter's Handbook.

Florida State might have the best recruiting class in the entire Atlantic Coast Conference.

"I think this would move Florida State's recruiting class to the top of the league," said recruiting analyst Brick Oettinger. "I'm not really surprised. Leonard is not one to leave any stone unturned."

Johnson actually signed with Georgia after his senior year at Albany (Ga.) Dougherty High in 2002, but never enrolled because he did not qualify academically.

This year, the Southeastern Conference office told its schools not to recruit Johnson after reports surfaced that a guidance counselor at a Georgia school asked a student to take the Dec. 7 SAT exam for Johnson.

Johnson said he had no knowledge of that scheme. He took the SAT on Dec. 7 in Maine and received a qualifying score.

Johnson picked FSU over Cincinnati and Connecticut. "There's some great competition in the ACC," Johnson said. You play Duke, North Carolina -- all the top schools. If I'm as good as everybody says I am, I've got a chance to prove that I'm one of the top players in the nation."

Well, at least Cincy didn't get AJ. They've been talking about him for weeks on the Bearcat boards. FSU has a great recruiting class, now will they all qualify?

I'm a bit shocked that they landed A Johnson. He is a bigtime pickup for FSU if he can get the grades straight.

Kleiza would see minutes next season for the Heels but Missouri has been a longtime favorite for him. Roy is going after him bigtime so who knows what will happen.

Watkins was a Doherty target who has a ton of upside and could be a force but doesn't seem all that interested in school. I think that scared Roy off.
