    Thursday, January 13, 2005

    Spencer Pennington

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Alabama junior quarterback Spencer Pennington has left the football team to concentrate on baseball, Tide head coach Mike Shula announced today.

“We appreciate all Spencer has done for the football team,” Shula said. “He was our starter the final seven games of the season, including the Music City Bowl. Everyone wishes him well as he pursues his desire to play baseball.”

Pennington finished the 2004 season averaging 108 yards a game passing on 82 of 152 attempts. He had eight interceptions and four touchdowns.

His best game of the season came against Minnesota in the Music City Bowl when he had career highs in attempts (36), completions (22) and yards (243). He finished his career hitting on 96 of 184 attempts (.522) for 1,134 yards, nine interceptions and five touchdowns.

Tide baseball coach Jim Wells said he expects Pennington to compete for playing time at first base and as a designated hitter on the UA baseball squad.
