I'd be highly suprised at that. One team might reach, but several? Doubt it.

I heard Charlie Casserly on local (Houston) radio yesterday talking about the Texans observations from the Senior Bowl. He was asked to rate the quarterbacks after the first four days.

    1. Carson Palmer - CC loved Carson and he seemed confident he would be the first pick of the draft whether its the Bengals or some else moves up.

    2. Kyle Boller - CC seemed to like everything about Boller and said "Boller has solidified his position as a first round pick".

3a. Chris Simms - CC didn't have any real compliments for Simms and I got the feeling he was rating him here not to offend the local radio audience in Houston. (Lots of UT fans here.)

3b. Dave Ragone - I got the feeling CC liked him better than Simms. Mentioned his strong arm and accuracy. Described him as having a LB mentality, which CC liked.

    5. Seneca Wallace - CC was surprised at how accurate Seneca was. Mentioned nothing about Seneca having to find another position in the NFL.

    6. Cliff Kingsbury - CC was not high on him. He mentioned his weak arm and that he is limited in the types of throws he can make. Sounds like a definite "day two" pick.

I know Leftwich isn't playing in Senior Bowl but wouldn't it be sweet if he fell into our lap due to other teams fears about his shin. In our offence he could be fantastic. But would love a OT to watch his backside as mobility is weak.

That seems to be the consensous. I have a feeling though he's being honest about Sims. What I've read suggests Ragone has been real inconsistent. I've just seen enough bad in games about Sims to downgrade him though that a good practice just doesn't get me on his bandwagon.

    mel's evaluations

Larry Johnson (1st) Powerful Eddie George-type runner
Kyle Boller (2nd) Good arm, accuracy -- excellent throwing motion
Dave Ragone (2nd) NFL arm, but consistency questions
Bryant Johnson (1st-2nd) Athletic, good size; needs to prove deep speed
Marcus Trufant (1st) Outstanding cover skills, one of best players in Mobile
Chris Simms (2nd) NFL arm but still makes bad decisions; hesitant at times
Carson Palmer (1st) Effortless thrower, good accuracy, should be top pick

    NO early reaches please!

The more I hear the more I think we need to relax and let the cards fall where they may at QB and seize any opportunity in respect to VALUE. If Palmer or Leftwich were to miraculously fall to #9 then we would obviously know who to take with that pick. In exactly the same sense we need to see who falls to our slots in subsequent rounds and pick accordingly. With so many other needs we need to take the MOST LIKELY NFL prospect available and if there are more talented and consistent prospects at WR RB and OL (to name a few) why would we gamble with guys like Grossman Boller and Kingsbury with our picks?

IMO we should avoid picking a QB too early just for the sake of needing one. I would feel a lot better about a guy like St Pierre or Gesser in the 4th or 5th than burning a 1st or 2nd on Grossman or Boller. Beyond Palmer and a healthy Leftwich it does not look like there are going to be any 2003 QBs that merit any significant separation from a very large pack of also-ran POTENTIAL NFL QBs.

The burly but flaky kids like Ragone and Simms are clearly the wildcards in this years draft picture. A few years from now either seems just as likely to prove to be a complete bust as an NFL starter as they are to be worthy of a top 10 pick as a franchise QB. Do we roll the damn dice again on yet another Weinke/Fasani prospect? This time we would have to use a 1st or 2nd instead of a 4th or 5th! Me nooooo likey.

    * This reply was originally meant for the "Would you reach for a QB” thread but it fits just as well here. I do not want us to do much reaching with any of our first 3 picks (especially at QB).

I don't think Boller would be a reach at all in the second.
