    Lemme catch you up.

House has always been a brilliant, if grumpy, doctor. He used to have a serious relationship with Stacy (played by Sela Ward). Then he got a blood clot in his right thight that backed up with fluid, caused him tremendous pain, and caused necrosis (dying tissue) to occur in his quad muscle.

Once the clot was diagnosed (by Dr. Cuddy, who is now his boss), the preferred treatment was amputation. The reason was that releasing all those toxins by removing the clot would cause excruciating pain throughout his body until he was naturally able to eliminate it. House refused to authorize the amputation, preferring to go through the pain rather than lose his leg.

The clot was removed, and as predicted, he was in terrible pain for weeks. It finally got to a point where the pain was literally killing him because of the stress to his body, particularly his brain and heart, and there was a risk that it would never fully go away. So he requested to be placed in a chemically induced coma to endure the worst of the toxin elimination process. Dr. Cuddy complied and put him in the coma.

Stacy, however, couldn't bear to continue to watch him suffer so much pain, and talked to Cuddy about alternatives. The two of them conspired together to remove the necrotic tissue from his quad to give him the best chance to recover and accelerate the recovery process. As House was in a coma, Stacy became his medical proxy and she authorized it with Dr. Cuddy.

The problem is, they knew House's leg would be permanently weakened, and he would likely have to walk with a cane for the rest of his life. What they did not count on was the chronic pain that remained after the procedure. He began managing the pain with increasing amounts of vicodin, until he was a full blown addict.

The decision Stacy made without his consent tore the relationship apart and pretty much killed any trust House had for people. He feels utterly betrayed, and cannot stand people who lie -- especially patients.

That's why House is pissed off at the world, but here's the story with his team:

Foreman (played by Omar Epps) is a brilliant neurologist, who is a me-first professional and doesn't allow himself to be vulnerable to anyone. He also has a distant past of grand theft auto, which House jabs him on from time to time.

Cameron (played by Jennifer Morrison) is an oncologist with a fairly severe case of co-dependency. She married a terminal cancer patient after he was diagnosed and cared for him until he died. Because of this 'Florence Nightingale' addiction, she sees House as another 'patient' she can care for and comfort, so there's some romantic/sexual tension between the two. She tries to be the voice of ethics and bedside manner, and is constantly frustrated at House because he places those values far below doing whatever it takes to save/cure his patients.

Chase (the Aussie) is a trauma specialist and former seminary student. He's basically a brown-noser, who's just trying to advance his career, and so he pretty much does whatever House tells him to, and rarely ever disagrees with him. House knows this, so he takes advantage of it as often as he can.

Wilson is an oncologist and House's best friend, but not part of his team.

At the end of last season, House was shot by the husband of one of his former patients. He requested a chemically induced coma rather than anesthesia, because of an experimental finding that comas can sometimes 'reboot' the brain and clear any psychological phantom maladies the brain is causing the body. When he first began rehabbing from his gunshot wounds, his leg seemed completely pain-free and his whole demeanor was different. However, he got reckless with his first case coming back, and Cuddy lied to him, telling him the patient wasn't really cured to teach him some humility. What it did, however, is shake his confidence to the core. Coincidentally, his leg started hurting again.

I remembered this one was on last night about 10 minutes into the show. I turned to Fox and saw freaking aliens. I thought "wtf" and thought the show had gone off the deep end. Turned out pretty good though.

Last night's episode was pretty good. The writing seems to have changed a little bit though. It seems the writers are going for the "laugh" a little more with House instead of letting the sarcasm flow naturally. The dialogue b/t House and Foreman regarding the "veterinarian" hospital is an example.
