Each generation of film goers eventually gets desensitized, there's always a new bunch comming along in 3 or 4 years though. Since the exorcist and the nightmare movies a good scare is harder to build.

Yeah. Testing boundaries is what it's all about. One great thing about the genre of horror is that it's so diverse... running the gamut from cheesy to disturbing, and from raunchy to subtle.

I think cultural changes play a role too. The 80s was a big boom period for horror, both in film and in books. It was the age of Jason, Pinhead, Freddy and Stephen King. But it was also the age of Reagan, the Moral Majority, and the bit Satanism scare. When society as a whole is more conservative, the counterculture - and horror is definately part of the counterculture - strains and bucks against it. For example, when Bill Clinton took office and liberalism became more prevailent in America, the horror genre began a noticeable slump. When anything goes, it becomes damn near impossible to shock or disturb.

The way things or going now, I think conditions will be prime for me to make my publishing debut in a couple of years! :)
