In the horror writers' community, the 80s are pretty much considered the Dark Ages. :) Once King blew up, all the publishing houses and studios wanted a piece of the horror action, and threw money at every hack with a typewriter. Lots of crap glutted the industry - book and cinema - as a result.

Asia has made a lot of strides in contributing to horror. I've only begun to discover this for myself. Silent Hill fans can also thank the Japanese for director/composer Akira Yamaoka (an absolute genius, in my opinion).

In Japan, the second highest grossing movie of all time behind ET is a movie called Cannibal Holocaust...an extremely realistic and graphically gory movie about a small band of movie makers taken prisoner by a small tribe of natives who tortutre and eat them.Extremely graphic and disturbing movie...very hard to watch.

There was a series of short films, 13 i think, tht came out of Japan a few uears ago called the Guinea Pig series. There was one episode in where a man was slowly slicing up the dead body of a wonman , almost like an autopsy..several people in the US reported it as a snuff film, it was so realistic....it was deemed a fake after the producers showed the authorities the special effects footage.

US filmakers are too afraid to step over the line these days....

They don't make horror movies like they used to.. I am really indecisive about going into some of these new films when they say "scarriest movie of the year".. the most recent scarry one that I can say did actually scare me was "Final Destination 2" and I can't even say that is horror, so that is sad to say the least.

The movie that makes me the most upset is "wrong turn" I saw previews and read reviews and when I saw the movie it was something totally different than I perceived it to be.

OH and don't even let me start talking about Freddie VS Jason.. that was the stupidest movie of all. 2 historical film characters that never die fighting against eachother.. and you know the whole time everyone is going to die and then at the end the two are going to come back some way and some how.. too predictable.

Good luck ecilam on your screenplays, I can't wait to hear more about it.

Two movies I remember that scared the holy crap out of me was Devil Doll and Exorcist.

Devil Doll was made circa 1933 and featured a ventriloquist dummy that came to life and murdered people.

As for the exorcist, well, what more needs to be said except I have heard the movie was tame compared to the book.

I would say the state of the scary movie is in disarray, but 28 days later and dawn of the dead, although a remake, might come back and save it. I'm fucking sick of teen slasher movies and especially what they did to TCSM.

I'm taking a horror class right now focused on the early peroids, 1920-1970. One thing I have learned is they will rip each other off blatantly, to no end. It's amazing how many Dracula movies there are. I thought it was just a current trend to be unoriginal, but it's been going on since the beginning.

I'm pumped about Dawn of the Dead, if they come anywhere close to the original it will be a small victory.

Oh yeah, THe Ring kicked ass.
