I laughed when I was reading...I'm a Bulls fan, and Tim Floyd just can't coach in the NBA.

    Floyd hiring stings Hornets

    Sam Smith

    June 9, 2003, 11:09 PM CDT

The New Orleans Hornets must feel proud. They have hired the worst coach in NBA history, Tim Floyd.

Not that I disagree, but don't take my word for it. It's right there in the NBA record book, a record of 49-190 in about 3½ seasons with the Bulls.

So let me see if I have this straight: You fire Paul Silas, the winningest coach in franchise history, who was 208-155 and held the team together through a tragedy, the death in an auto accident of popular guard Bobby Phills.

There was a franchise relocation from Charlotte when the owners were shopping the team all over the country, and injuries to top players Baron Davis and Jamal Mashburn.

You say Silas has taken the team as far as he can and you need a coach to get to that elusive next level.

    And you hire Tim Floyd?

What a great country. Do your job as badly as it has ever been done by anyone, antagonize your bosses and virtually every player on the roster, see nothing but improvement for the team only after you've left.

And then get a three-year contract worth about $4.8 million to coach one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference.

Maybe there is something to that aw-shucks country boy charm.

"This is truly a dream situation for me," Floyd said during a news conference Monday in New Orleans. "To be given the opportunity to coach a team with loads of talent and potential, great owners, a top-notch basketball staff and unbelievable fans, and do it in the city I call home is better than anything I could have imagined. I believe we can contend for the Eastern Division championship next year."

They'd better. Because after next season the Hornets switch to the Western Conference, with Charlotte returning to the NBA in expansion. Floyd should be able to tell them what missing the playoffs is like.

Floyd's hiring came as the Houston Rockets were announcing that former Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy had agreed to become their coach. A deal is expected to be signed later this week.

"Jeff has been very successful. His defensive philosophy is very good. We decided he was the best fit for this team," Houston general manager Carroll Dawson said. "We're very excited about this. I think we got a very good coach. I think it is going to be a good marriage."

Van Gundy is expected to bring along Patrick Ewing, his former Knicks center, to tutor Rockets center Yao Ming.

Hornets insiders say former Cavs coach John Lucas will be added to Floyd's staff.

Unless he has mellowed substantially since leaving the Bulls in December 2001, Floyd must realize he needs a buffer to deal with veteran players. Hornets ownership long has been known as the most dysfunctional in the NBA this side of Clippersland. Floyd, actually, was a beneficiary.

The real reason Silas wasn't retained?

Co-owner Ray Wooldridge's desire to hire old buddy Mike Fratello. But majority owner George Shinn, whose criminal sexual assault trail—he was acquitted—helped turn the Charlotte community against his team, has been feuding with Wooldridge. Shinn vetoed Fratello and accepted Floyd, who formerly coached at the University of New Orleans and lives in the city.

Leave it to the notoriously penurious Shinn, who let 24 straight free agents go before re-signing Mashburn, to save on moving expenses.

But it would be surprising if Floyd isn't moving on before long. His combustible relationships with Bulls players were legend, Floyd frequently stalking out of meetings screaming and cursing, players laughing about his inability to control himself or deliver any workable plan.

The revisionist history he offered Monday suggested he had no say in personnel decisions, although he persuaded then-general manager Jerry Krause to pursue Grant Hill and Tim Duncan over Tracy McGrady. He also said he was forced to run the triangle offense.

Floyd had bitter relationships with Jamal Crawford and Ron Artest and tried to humiliate Tyson Chandler, calling him lazy in front of reporters. All, including Elton Brand, improved dramatically after they left or Floyd left, as did the Bulls.

Unsure of themselves, the roster of free agents the Bulls brought in and out during Floyd's tenure was in no position to challenge the coach. But when the team brought in veterans such as Charles Oakley, Ron Mercer and Greg Anthony, they were shocked at Floyd's lack of game plans and organization.

Floyd arrived after the bitter breakup of the Bulls' championship teams in 1998, so no one expected him to make the playoffs or win many games. But he helped create an atmosphere of rancor, bitterness and losing around the Bulls that only now is dissipating.

Although Floyd, 49, was successful in college at New Orleans and Iowa State, his wicked temper and con games were out of place in the NBA.

He rarely worked on the floor at practice unless the owner was around and was always quick to run to the side of an influential columnist making a rare trip to practice. He seemed like he could charm you out of your wallet, or perhaps $4.8 million over three years.

"The people of New Orleans already know that Tim is a class act both on the court and off," Shinn said. "When we began this process we promised our fans that we would do everything possible to bring a championship-caliber team to New Orleans. You can see that Tim has the passion and enthusiasm to lead our team toward fulfilling that promise."

No question Tim Floyd is the man to lead the Bugz to a championship. Absolutely. Positively...

No, not really. I feel like doing a cuda "rollie eyes".

Shinn and Woolridge will be destroyed when they move to the Western conference. THAT will be funny.
