    The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 06/22/05 Georgia Tech senior starting cornerback Reuben Houston was arrested Tuesday in connection with a marijuana distribution operation based in Fresno, Calif.

Houston, from Peachtree City, allegedly conspired to distribute and possess nearly 100 pounds of marijuana valued at $60,000, according to a federal criminal complaint filed in Fresno.

He has been suspended from school and from the football team, coach Chan Gailey said late Tuesday night.

Houston allegedly planned to receive the marijuana from Oscar Rosales, 39, according to a release sent by the U.S. Attorneys Eastern California District. The marijuana was delivered to the Georgia Tech campus by Rosales' nephew, 22-year-old Anthony Baltazar, who received the drugs from a courier arranged by Rosales.

Federal agents instructed Georgia Tech officials not to comment on the investigation.

"This is obviously a very serious situation," Gailey said. "I'm still gathering information and cannot comment further at this time."

The case was investigated by the Fresno Methamphetamine Task Force, comprised of several law enforcement agencies, including the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Internal Revenue Service, the Fresno Police Department and the California Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement.

Houston's mother, Patricia Houston, expressed "disillusionment" when reached Tuesday night, but declined further comment.

According to the release, the charge against Houston stems from a year-long, investigation of Rosales' drug trafficking organization. The investigation, according to the release, alleges Rosales had been involved in national drug trafficking for a decade.

The investigation culminated in the seizure of nearly 600 pounds of marijuana and the arrests of 15 co-conspirators. Rosales is currently charged with conspiring with 16 co-conspirators, including Baltazar, to distribute and possess 1,000 kilograms or more of marijuana. The charge carries a mandatory minimum penalty of 10 years in prison, a maximum life term and a maximum fine of $4 million.

U.S. District Court Judge Oliver W. Wanger has ordered Rosales to be detained while he waits for trial. Baltazar will also remain detained until trial. It was unclear Tuesday night where Houston is being retained.

A spokesperson at the Atlanta City Jail was asked about Houston and said jail officials could not give details about federal detainees. U.S. Marshals said they had no knowledge of the arrest.

Houston is a two-year starter for the Yellow Jackets and as a senior leader, was expected to be a cog in the Jackets' secondary this fall. In his career, the 6-0, 195-pound defensive back has recorded seven interceptions, 151 tackles and 14 pass breakups.

Houston could be another casualty for a defense that was expected to be one of the best in the ACC. Senior Travis Parker is academically ineligible and defensive tackle Daryl Richard is out with a knee injury.

AJC reporter Saeed Ahmed contributed to this report.
