    Restaurant chain Moe's Southwest Grill plans to give away free burritos at 10 Charlotte-area locations all day today to welcome customers to one of its new menu items – and lure diners who may have drifted away or never visited in the first place.

    Customers visiting the participating stores from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. can receive a free “Joey Jr.” burrito, a downsized version of the restaurant's “Joey Bag of Donuts” burrito that's still larger than the kids' size. It includes a choice of meat, fish or tofu; black or pinto beans; rice, pico de gallo, lettuce and shredded cheese wrapped in a warm tortilla.

    In addition, the 5,000th customer will receive free Moe's for a year.

    The local promotion was inspired by one undertaken by 13 Raleigh-area Moe's in January, spokeswoman Carolyn Roman said. Those stores gave away 15,000 burritos in one day, she said. The move will also put local Moe's among a number of restaurant chains that have given away free items in the last year in an attempt to generate customer appreciation and interest, especially in new and revamped products. In the Charlotte market, Moe's vies for burrito-eaters' dollars with chains such as Salsarita's, Chipotle and Qdoba.

    I'm nearly 2 hours away from there. Their food is shit anyway. But thanks for the head's up. Free food is serious business.
