UNC got invited to bowls that were beneath their record because they don't travel all that well.

Dude, you're insane. UNC has always been invited to bowls because we travel well. I was dragged along for my first Gator Bowl at the age of 3 when we played Arkansas (my parents had left me behind for the Bluebonnet Bowl the previous year). We never got into the very top bowls because we never proved we were good enough.

Just because your family travels well, doesn't mean the rest of the fanbase does. Our rep with bowls is that we are crappy travellers. And if you don't have consistent home sellouts (or actual butts in the seats) you can't really argue that.

Bowls want VT, TN, ND, FL, NCSU, or Clemson over UNC (assuming they have similar records).

All of those are true except NCSU. State has no reputation when it comes to traveling because with the exception of one year, they never get a chance to go anywhere so no one knows what they'll do. As for the rest, UNC certainly doesn't have the football tradition of those schools but still travels extremely well. Carolina doesn't sell out home games because the alums are apathetic about those, but we sold 65 thousand seats at the Continental Tire Bowl last year (since Boston College alums basically didn't come). And sure, that was in Charlotte, but if UNC alums have one thing it's money. Because of that, we have always traveled very well to bowl games. The only bowl we've ever not sold out was that asinine Las Vegas bowl against San Diego State in '98.

See, you can have a discussion without being a prick. So, at least we know it's possible. :woot:

In all seriousness though, non travelling is our rep.

You can add SC to that list as well. And in most of those games, you'll notice that the Heels played a team that is historically known as good travellers (AL, AK, WV, & VT). In fact, in all of those games, I'm pretty sure we were ranked a lot higher than the opposition - topped off by the #7 Heels shellacking the unranked Hokies.

But yeah, the Tire Bowl sold out because of UNC.

In all seriousness, it really fucking isn't. We have a very good reputation when it comes to traveling, and always have. That's why the bowls kept talking about how they desperately wanted UNC to win that last game against Duke to become bowl eligible last season. The problem is that we haven't had many chances to travel lately.
