I'm sorry, did I miss something? Here I thought Spurrier was getting Coach of the Year talk because he won one more game against a far easier schedule than Bunting faced last year. And Urban Meyer? Check Florida's record, champ. Just because you don't understand that Bunting is a good coach doesn't mean that the world should function based on your illegitimate opinion. Now if Carolina and Bunting ever get into the BCS picture that will be a miracle, but that wasn't going to happen no matter who we hired. UNC has too much competition for recruits, too little history as a football power, and too much focus on basketball to be one of the top teams in the country.

Christ, you're acting like a State fan.

    Brain:
I was there and the team did play poorly. Duke was more fired up than I've ever seen them and actually played pretty well, but we had our usual dropped passes early and then later in the game Baker missed at least four wide open receivers for touchdowns by overthrowing them. Throw in some sloppy tackling and there was good reason to be frustrated, but at least we won.

Thanks for agreeing with me for once. This is all I'm saying. UNC + Bunting = perpetual mediocrity.

Do you honestly believe that Bunting is just as good a coach as Urban Meyer and Spurrier? Can I hit some of that funky green with you if that's the case? Bottom line, both coaches are in their first year. This is what, Bunting's 5th? I'll cut any coach some slack, especially Spurrier who is obviously building a nice program down in SC.

UNC + anyone = perpetual mediocrity, and you're deluded if you think otherwise. Schools almost never sustain powerhouses in multiple major sports, and there are all the aforementioned disadvantages facing Carolina in football. I think Spurrier and Meyer are better coaches, but I also think that neither one of them would be doing much better here. And as noted, you shat on what Bunting did last year when Spurrier is getting coach of the year consideration for arguably doing less.

Or a State fan who jumped ship.

I beg to differ. UNC was ranked in the top 5 and had consecutive 10 win seasons under Mack Brown. So it most certainly CAN be done, just not with Bunting.

You can't sustain if you can't get even there in the first place.

Mack Brown may have not sustained it. But he showed that we can get there.

Now give me somebody who can do the same. Time's up.

That was before we had to play Miami and Virginia Tech each season.

Those "great" Mack Brown teams couldn't beat FSU, and wouldn't have been BCS teams.
I get that UNC fans want to be part of an elite college football team. Maybe a year or two years in a decade, that could happen, though not extremely likely.

The end result is, you don't fire a coach expecting you're going to get a better coach, better program, better anything. Things are good, and certainly not bad enough there to fire people over "what-if"s that aren't attainable realistically but every so often. The chances of hiring away an elite coach, one that'll stay at UNC, with assistants that will stay at UNC, and it all working out, aren't much greater at all than what's there now.

UNC is just a stepping stone for most good coaches to get to better programs.
