I'm not gonna get into the merits of Herb Sendek as a Head Coach. I know his style. I know what he is doing. His plan is coming together. If he goes to OSU (which I don't think will happen), who will replace him? Ask yourself this...Herb Sendek or Les Robinson?

Ohio St. wants shot at Stallings

By BRYAN MULLEN
Staff Writer
Vanderbilt has granted Ohio State permission to talk to men's basketball Coach Kevin Stallings about the Buckeyes' vacant post.

Vanderbilt Vice Chancellor for Student Life and University Affairs David Williams said the call came late last week.

''But we told (Ohio State Director of Athletics) Andy Geiger that we were going to keep him,'' Williams said.

Stallings would not comment when reached last night.

Jim O'Brien was fired as Ohio State coach on June 8 after he admitted giving $6,000 to a recruit in 1999.

Stallings led Vanderbilt (23-10) to its first NCAA Sweet 16 appearance since 1993 before losing to eventual national champion Connecticut.

Vanderbilt was working with Stallings on a new deal after the conclusion of last season, but nothing has been finalized. Williams said he ran into Stallings recently while working out a new deal with baseball Coach Tim Corbin, who interviewed at Auburn, and told Stallings, ''We haven't forgot about you.''

''We have exchanged some things and we're working on something,'' Williams said. ''I'm hoping to sit down with him soon to get it worked out.''

Stallings interviewed for the Ohio State position in 1997 and was thought to be the No. 2 candidate behind O'Brien. Stallings was the coach at Illinois State at the time, and two years later became the coach at Vanderbilt.

Geiger already has lured one coach away from Vanderbilt, bringing in women's basketball Coach Jim Foster two seasons ago.
