I'm very up in the air over this one.

Mike Mignola's Hellboy is probably the best comic book overall I've ever read. Great characters, beautiful artwork, solid storytelling, and lots of fun action.

So now this movie's coming out, by either the producer or director (memory fails at the moment) of Resident Evil, which I hated. Resident Evil should have at least resembled a horror movie, but was little more than overly-slick sci-fi with zombies for props; throwaway fluff, at best.

I've seen the trailer for the Hellboy movie. I dislike the look; it's not dark or gritty enough... way too slick and shiny. HOWEVER... the script will be based on the "Seed of Destruction" storyline from the original comic, which was outstanding. I hope the script follows through where the visuals fail.

Also, the trailer featured the music of my favorite heavy metal band, Dimmu Borgir. Thus I'm prejudiced. I really, really want this one to be good...

I've never read the comic book so I have no prejudice but the movie trailers I've seen looks like it will be pretty good

I agree with the trailer looking too slick. It should be a fun movie, regardless.

i just saw the trailer last night. that was cool looking.

and the line about "we're the ones who bump back" -- that was quality.

    what is the hellboy premise?

The trailer was pretty cool, but I got the impression it wouldn't be of 'X-Men' movie quality.

In WWII, Allied forces in Europe witnessed a bizarre explosion in the ruins of an old church. Within the crater was a strange red childlike creature, half-human, half-demon. The demon child was nicknamed "Hellboy" and taken to a secret military base for study.

Hellboy grew up under the care of the U.S. military. At maturity he became an operative for the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD). Hellboy is now the world's greatest paranormal investigator. But cryptic prophecies about his dark origin and a hidden cabal of of Nazi occultists threaten to come back to haunt him.

Ugh, I couldn't stand Mignola's art, I think I can draw better than him. I really hated his Batman covers, IMO.

His older stuff wasn't as hot. What gets me is his skill and detail when drawing statues, old crumbly buildings and ancient works of art. He gives his work a sense of grit and texture without a lot of extra cross-hatching; he has a very clean, readable style. Lord knows he's spawned a legion of imitators. Some of them are pretty horrendous, but a few have actually pulled it off.
