As much as I'd like the Heels to pull this one out, SC by 13-17

The line is 6? Good lord. Who wouldn't take South Carolina at -6?

    Hmm...

I'm glad we got him when we did. I'm enjoying every damn minute of Spurrier coaching USC. South Carolina fans have been loyal to a fault through years of mediocre football. It's amazing what Spurrier is acomplishing, particularly in light of two thing: one, the mess that Lou Holtz left him, and two, he's getting a lot of good performance from underclassmen.

Throughout the 2004 season, his name sizzled in speculation about where he would eventually land.

One of those places was North Carolina.

"One booster guy called one time, but it didn't open that year," he said of North Carolina, then coached by John Bunting.

Would Spurrier have considered the North Carolina job?

"Oh sure, I don't have anything against North Carolina. That's a wonderful place," he said. "Where you coach is all timing.

"Who knows what would've happened if that job was open when I was free and available. It wasn't. The reason I'm here is I was available when this one opened up."

Actually I think it's amazing because Spurrier's offense has sucked balls ever since he came to South Carolina. Tyrone Nix is why they're winning, and I have a feeling that he'll be getting calls about head coaching jobs as soon as this off-season.

He still hasn't found a 'Spurrier' quarterback. Smelley has potential, but the verdict is still out. Blake Mitchell was a 'safe' QB, he was a good game manager, but not a Spurrier QB.

Considering the mess Lou left with losing some scholarships and not so good recruiting classes, he's done well. The biggest areas lacking when Spurrier came in were the O-line and the D-line. He's doing a lot of rotation with the O-line still, and there's been a few injuries, but it's getting better. I didn't expect them to be competitive in the SEC East this year because of the lines. He had a lot of young linemen on both sides of the ball getting experience last year, and I expected it to begin bearing fruit this year, but really not as much as we are seeing so far. If Rice had not gone to the NFL, the offense would look much better (obviously). Spurrier has been rotating in just about every WR he has to try to find someone to complement McKinley (sorta like the Panthers and Steve Smith, but McKinley's no where near THAT talented).

Nix is showing out, no doubt. The defense kept Carolina in the game in the third quarter against Kentucky, when the offense sputtered the entire quarter. But then the offense started shoveling the dirt on Kentucky in the fourth.

I suspect some of it is Spurrier adjusting to what he has to work with. I also suspect that Spurrier is perhaps changing or adjusting some of his philosophy. Not that he's going John Fox, and all, but he seems to be playing a bit more ball control type ball (yes even though the defense has been horrid against the run).

Spurrier didn't get huge recruiting classes at Duke or even his early years at Florida, and supposedly he can turn a talentless bum into a good quarterback. If he needs star recruits to have a good offense, how is he better than any other coach? Perhaps he's simply not the innovator he once was.
