I got scammed. Well not so much scammed as I went to get cables and that's what Best Buy had so I bought them. I hadn't read this thread. I'm going to order from monoprice and return the monster cables.

What about the Monster Power surge protectors? I am assuming they are overpriced as well. At $80 it doesn't seem nearly as bad as a HDMI for $100.

Are their any cheaper suitable alternatives?

I don't buy any of that shit. $80 insurance for $1500 TV seems like a bad deal.

You don't use a power strip?

I use a $45 one that I got on sale for $19.99. But when it storms really bad, like last summer, I unplug the expensive stuff from the wall, including the cable line.

Amazing what 5 minutes of effort can save you.

Do you go home every time it storms?

I can, but no. Easier to unhook before I leave.

Doesn't a surge protector let you skip all the unplugging? Or are you just being extra safe?

Surge protectors are great, but not foolproof. A single direct strike can blow out the resistor in a surge protector, and over time smaller strikes can do the same thing. Worse, most protectors won't tell you when they no longer function.

If you can avoid your system getting struck by lightening, I'd recommend it. Just because you have a surge protector doesn't mean you should watch your tv during a thunderstorm.

edit: HH makes a good point, you have to disconnect your cable/satellite line as well. And that line doesn't go through a surge protector, yet lightening can still come to your tv/receiver through this line.
