Harrington is not bait...Bledsoe is

Here's the real rub for the Lions & Panthers: Only two teams with the top 18 picks think they need to reload at quarterback -- Cincinnati, with the 10th pick, and Washington, with the 18th.

After the Lions, the teams fall this way, with their quarterback status:

Buffalo (Alex Van Pelt, and courting Drew Bledsoe), San Diego (Doug Flutie, with Drew Brees in the wings), Dallas (Quincy Carter and free-agent Chad Hutchinson), Minnesota (Daunte Culpepper), Kansas City (Trent Green) and Jacksonville (Mark Brunell, who is not on the trade market).

Next up is Cincinnati, with a quarterback mess. The Bengals have Jon Kitna and Akili Smith, whose three seasons have been marked by injuries and incompletions since the Bengals made him the third pick in 1999.

Between the Bengals and Redskins are Indianapolis (Peyton Manning), Arizona (Jake Plummer), New Orleans (Aaron Brooks), Tennessee (Steve McNair), the Giants (Kerry Collins), Cleveland (Tim Couch) and Atlanta (Michael Vick) -- all teams whose most pressing needs are not at quarterback.

That leaves the Panthers stuck at No. 2, unless they want to risk dropping to the Bengals' 10th spot. By then, the top defensive end (Julius Peppers of North Carolina), cornerback (Quentin Jammer of Texas) and safety (Roy Williams of Oklahoma) would be gone. They aren’t going to drop that far…they will most likely take Peppers and the Lions will take Jammer…

The real intangible in the situation is not Harrington, it is Drew Bledsoe. Buffalo is going to use him as bait in order for Harrington to fall to them….and if something strange happens on draft day…Buffalo will make the trade to get Bledsoe.

the trade-down isn't likely to happen. the draft just isn't very top-heavy this year. in fact, it's one of the worst years to have the no. 2 pick that i can remember.

Cincy is still in the mix for Bledsoe also. It will depend on what New England will demand in return for trading him. Bledsoe has backtracked on not wanting to go there, so the situation is still up in the air. This one will go until Buffalo is on the clock April 20.
