people can't hack into it to produce a playable game. They are still missing at least a gig and a half of stuff, like maps and the actual game engine. you can however use GCFscape to dig through the files for images, skins, textures.

maybe they should have been making the game instead of stuff like this and it could have been out earlier..

Just got it this week. Most realistic graphics I've seen, even edges out Doom3, which is fucking impressive. These games just keep one-upping each other. I love it!

I'm now in the process of trying to let a friend use the game since I'm done, but Valve has put a bitch of a protection scheme on it. Once installed on a PC, it seems forever locked to that machine unless you send the CDs back to Valve. Seems stupid as shit to me, but if anyone has heard of another way to "crack" the game, please post.

    Otherwise, HL2 rocks.

yeah, they're a bit paranoid about the cracking thing. might have something to do with having had hl2 source code stolen once or twice.

it's a pretty scary thing they're doing. that is, if people accept the notion of HAVING to be online in order to install and then also being unable to install on another machine, other companies will follow suit and that's just how it will be.

maybe that'll make everything cheaper (they claim the reason things are expensive is to make up for all the stolen copies) but i seriously doubt it.

the only way a price physically goes up on a product is if it's stolen from a store. Then the retailer may adjust the price to make up for the loss. however, I dont see how they can justify raising prices because people downloaded games illegally. They technically didnt lose anything.

they aren't charging for the physical product -- the actual manufacturing is probably about $2 for a $50 game. it's like a movie. if you sneak in to see a flick, are you stealing anything?

not that i agree with the justification...

I also am guessing that people accept it because it's Half Life 2. I'm not so sure any game could get away with a setup like that.
