and Zeppelin took them musically in their day, IMO.

Zep, Floyd, Rolling Stones, Beatles. Take your pick of the four, IMO there's a long way down from these four.

I don't think you can argue the point on the Beatles, even if you don't like them or think they are too "pop." And they were pop. Arguable the most commercially successful rock group of all time.

They were able to go from a Pop group that wanted to hold your hand, to a pop group who had hit, catchy songs about songs about things like adultery to dreamy fantasy, infused eastern music into pop hits, and increased production values and instromentation.

That commercial success while so dramatically changing their style and staying relevent made it possible for Sabbath to invent metal, the Dead to infuse feedback and jazz stylings into folk music, and Gene Simmons to put on a Kabuki costume. It ain't happening without them.

Yeah, the Beatles are a given. Then after that, the whole thing becomes subjective. If there's a band called the Muhammad Ali's, they get my vote for being the greatest.

For what it's worth, I do like The Beatles and I agree with your assesment of their incredible influence on music. If the question was, "Who's the most influential rock band of all time?", it's The Beatles, hands down. But if the question is who is "the greatest rock band", I still have to go with The Rolling Stones.
They were there practically from the beginnig. Nobody captures the spirit of rock'n'roll like The "Stones". They've managed to stay relevant for four decades. Even if they look old and creepy on stage, last year's "A Bigger Bang" is a damned fine album.
I don't even mind them looking old and creepy. Hell, I'm getting old and creepy, too.

Why is it that people who became adults in the 80's have no taste in music whatsoever? Grid?
