    Every band mentioned in this thread so far was "mainstream", with the exception of a couple on Meat's list. You don't get to be "mainstream" without being influential or progressive in some way.

    Go buy Live at Fillmore East, 2nd Set and 1st Set and you'll see what I'm talking about.

    Steely Dan? Solid, pumped out a lot of hits through the 70's, took the 80's off like any self respecting artist, then started back up in the 90's, only to win 'album of the year' in 2000! and still pumpin' out some serious noise!
