Maybe it's just my generation, my musical influences, etc.. etc...

But I say The Rolling Stones just can't be argued with.

You're right. Tough to argue when you are too busy laughing your ass off.

It all depends on what specifics you would call the greatest? Best lyrics? Best melody? Had the most recordings? Made the most money? Had the most influence? Most familiar? What?

I listen to all kinds of music, love various artists, get on one, stick with them and then move on to another. I can still appreciate what I've always known and add to my tastes, I don't trade one in for another.
    However...
....You won't go anywhere in the civilized world and someone not know who the Rolling Stones are. I knew them when I was a baby, and I can still listen to and enjoy them today. That's alls I'm sayin.

I think the Beatles are the same as you describe here, bplus potentially have MORE international influence.

No doubt. I grew up listening to them too....

It's all in who you like more, and who had the most influence in your life I think. We wouldn't be where we are today in music without The Beatles, but does that make them the best? Dunno, it depends on ones criteria.

So now I'm saying- there's no way to say- too many variables.

    My Top 5

Here is my Top 5 list.

    1. The Doors- Nobody was doing what they were at that time. They paved the way for many artists who wanted to explore a darker side as well as profanity. The Ed Sullivan incident is one of the first times the issue of censorship of lyrics came up. If it wasn't for them, many later acts would have had a harder time doing what they were with the use of language. They infused blues guitar melodies with organ and piano, plus some of the best lyrics ever written.

    2. Led Zepplin- One of the first "hard rock" bands, they paved the way for bands like Sabbath and Metallica. Stairway to Heaven and Tangerine are both amazing songs and show the versatility of this band. Jimmy Page is still one of the best guitarists ever.

    3. Pink Floyd- They paved the way for many electronic acts, and were among the first to use synthesizers (along with Emerson, Lake and Palmer)widely on their albums. This echoed in a new era in music and was an evolution in instruments and sound. Although Dark Side of the Moon is considered by most one of the classic albums, I don't consider it their best. My vote would go to Animals or Wish You Were Here.

    4. The Beatles- No self-respecting fan of music can leave them off a list of the greatest bands of all-time. Their record speaks for itself. They went from pop icons to defining rock n' roll at a time when this style of music was coming into its own. Norwegian Wood is still one of the most incredible songs ever written, and showed an evolution in musical style.

    5. The Rolling Stones- One of the first bands to be heavily influenced by the blues music of the 30's and 40's. This is nowhere more evident than their name. Rollin' Stone was a Muddy Waters song. They popularized this style of music and continue to be one of the most successful and popular bands of all time.
