I'm voting for the Grateful Dead.

30 years of quality music. They stayed together the whole time, (small breaks, keyboardists kept dieing, but the main group stayed together for 30 + years). Thousands of devoted fans. Transcended genres of music. They lived the rock and roll lifestyle, sex, drugs (lot's o' drugs), and rock and roll, and the music is as good today as it was when they were playing. Plus their main artist/musical influence died of drugs, what more do you want. I think the Rolling Stones are a close 2nd for the above reasons, but IMO, the Grateful Dead, is the greatest band of all time.

Tough one. I'm going to have to go with Pink Floyd.

    Especially Meddle through The Wall....

The music was great then and is great now. The old Stones stuff sounds dated. Just basic RnR. The Dead...they have a LOT of shit in their catalog.

    Got to be Floyd.

    The Allman Brothers Band?

And I'm not talking about their pop hits like Ramblin Man and Melissa. Check out their live music in the 90s. Dickey Betts and Warren Haynes were frickin unreal.

If you think Southern Rock when you hear their name, you are way off.

Lynyrd Skynyrd without a doubt. They only played for a few years but they generated great song after great song. No one else has really been able to copy their sound successfully even though people have tried for almost thirty years.

i think pink floyd could certainly be one of the greatest. i don't think they get enough recognition as such, either.
