AND NOW, perhaps we can put Liza Minnelli and David Gest to rest for a few moments, as they sort out their separation. Liza looked splendid at Le Cirque several nights ago, and I know for sure that she took off for L.A. only yesterday.

Gest tells people he's in Hawaii when he calls on his cell phone. Evidently he's done quite a bit of calling; insiders believe he is responsible for the negative stories that appeared in the National Enquirer and elsewhere, announcing the separation, more or less, on his terms.

Whenever I saw Liza and David together, they were usually annoyingly lovey-dovey. But she was always hanging back just a bit -- "moving away to safety," I called it. (If you ever saw the video of their soul kiss at the altar when they married on March 16, 2002, you saw even then that Liza was metaphorically saying, "Down, boy!" and moving back from his controlling grasp.) But David enjoyed his moment in the limelight too much to use common sense. He was also truly caught up in the myth of his romance. This was no marriage of "convenience," as so many surmised.

Here's my true take. Liza is still a wonderful, talented person, who has never done a mean thing in her life. We can give David Gest lots of credit for "rescuing" her and putting her back on the professional track. But when it comes to living with someone who is working at being a recovering addict, he really doesn't have a clue. He wanted Liza to "get well" and get over it! She needs to give recovery her full attention, and she knows it.

Gest had 15 minutes of high-profile celebrity. But Liza has had that for most of her life, and she can't make it her be-all and end-all. Let's just wish them both well and close the book. (Believe me, if anyone attacks Liza for anything, they'll end up the loser. People love this girl, as well they should! Her life has been a roller coaster of glory and horror, and I'd like to see her settle down for a smooth ride.)

Oh, yes, and the divorce: Surely they have a prenup, and that shouldn't

What a shame. I haven't slept since I heard the news. Of course, that was only an hour ago.
