Not so much a statement of proof, but if Hall had been granted the power you suggest, he'd be on the sidelines. Hall and Jay Paterno still split play calling duties as they have for the last two seasons. Hall is there as much to groom Jay Paterno as anything else.
I do see Galen Hall as a possible successor, but that will hinge on how long he intends to continue coaching as well. I used to think Jay would ultimately take over and while I still feel it is a possibility, he doesn't quite have the experience required to run the show just yet.
Hall could be the bridge between the Paterno family coaching tenure at PSU.

In short, I find little to solidify either arguement. Only information that can be interpereted or suggestable and I found nothing that suggest the assistants are in full control at Penn State.

Feel free to continue to argue your point as I am certain you will.

Are you daft? People calling the plays are almost always in the booth so that they can better see what is going on. Moreover, you've already conceded the fact that Paterno has yielded at least some degree of his control to his assistants and that this has rather "coincidentally" coincided with going from a 7-16 record over the last two seasons to a 9-1 season this year. I have no problems with you saying that Paterno still deserves some of the credit for that turnaround, although I think you're wrong. The part of your position I had a problem with was when you tried to pretend that Paterno still deserved all or at least most of the credit, and when you pretended I didn't have more facts on my side than you have on yours.

And by the way, your article proved my point. "Paterno handled his most recent season by relying, more than ever, on his own will -- on his steadfast desire to keep going as usual," "Paterno's judgment spawned problems," and "Almost mechanically, Paterno makes decisions and sticks with them" all support my point. But the coup de grĂ¢ce is where it says, "And though Paterno had hired new offensive coordinator Galen Hall before the 2004 season, he refused to surrender a system that forced Hall to split play-calling duties with quarterbacks coach Jay Paterno." Joe Paterno's bad judgment (and nepotism) caused Penn State to lose last season. This year Paterno turned over play-calling duties in full to Hall, and allowed him to install an entirely new offense incorporating elements of the spread offense popularized by Urban Meyer and others.

I was with ya until this point, simply not true. And it's a statement YOU made, it's a year old document that you decided to expound on.

Either way, I am done argueing the point. Feel free to move on to your next battle or show your work. I'm sure you'll see to it that you get the last word.

"Ivan: And now, drum roll please, your coach of the half-year, which is better than your half-coach of the year:

Pat: I would have said Charlie Weis of Notre Dame last week, but Joe Paterno, gee ... I'll say Paterno, as much for what he's not doing as what he's doing. One thing I heard in Happy Valley is that he's keeping his hands off the play-calling and letting Galen Hall do it.

Ivan: Maybe Galen Hall is the coach of the half-year.

"t's amazing what can happen when 78-year-old Hall of Famer Joe Paterno actually turns past the first few pages of his playbook. Paterno has been historically conservative in his play calling, even in his championship years. But, after Penn State's punchless 4-7 season last year, he wisely agreed to allow offensive coordinator Galen Hall to pretty much scrap the I formation, ditching the fullback in favor of the shotgun in an attempt to maximize the talents of exciting, mobile quarterback Michael Robinson. The spread offense has become much more effective with newfound speed from freshman receivers Derrick Williams and Justin King, who also plays cornerback."
