I totally overlooked this post before, but this is the biggest change Paterno has made. In the past, kids coming out of HS knew going to PSU meant at least one year on the bench and possibly as much as three years. Pre-2005, it was a rarity for a true freshman to see the field, this year he has four who are regular contributors or starters and one that took a red shirt...if memory serves me correctly. In addition, there is one red shirt freshman starting.
Paterno has had more of a philsophical change, part of it is the change in approach offensively and part of it is his stance on playing young players. He's still every bit the coach he ever was, he's just a little more open minded.

Like I said, Collin, your entitled to your opinion. But on this topic, it holds as much water as Tom Cruise on Psychology, IMO.

Well of course it's going to be ridiculous in your opinion, because you strenuously disagree with it. But the facts are that this has been widely reported in the media, Paterno was terrible for the last several years when the team was fully under his control, and he did completely turn over the offense to Galen Hall who has incorporated elements of the spread offense and dramatically changed the play-calling from what it had been throughout most of Paterno's tenure.

So I have that, and you have ... what exactly? Your desire not to see Paterno as a figurehead? Yeah, I'm pretty sure you're arguing out your ass on this one. I'm fine with you disagreeing, but pretending like I'm the crazy one when I have all the facts on my side and you have absolutely nothing except the sentimental desire to see Paterno as relevant is more than a little dishonest and misleading.

The same thing is happening with Bobby Bowden now. Time has finally passed both of them by. Goes to show everybody just how great a coach Dean Smith was in college BB. He retired in his late 60s after 40 years of kicking everybody's asses. Difference was he was still kicking ass when he quit. He'd still be doing it today.

If I remember correctly, some were saying the same thing about Dean Smith.

Smith continued to dominate every season and was getting the top recruits in the nation right up until the day he retired. If people were saying the same things about him, they weren't deserved the way that they were with Paterno (verdict is still out on Bowden).

Like I said, the reports you refer to have the same number of reports stating the opposite. It's called selctive reporting and it is all too common in the media. You have no more "facts" on the matter than I do.
But you go ahaed and keep thinking your right, your entitled to that. However your probably no more right than I am on the matter...truth is likely somewhere in the middle.

Where? Your imagination doesn't count as a source.
    2003: 3-9
    2004: 4-7
2005: Galen Hall revamps the offense and takes over play-calling. 9-1

You can continue to insist that the coordinators taking over hasn't had the degree of impact that I think it has, but you can't argue that I don't have more facts on my side than you do on yours.

    But I suppose your's does?

I don't dispute the records, nor do I dispute that the asst's are MORE involved...however they have not "taken over" as YOU have suggested. The Costas interview covered it and it fully suggested that Jo Pa is still the top man at Penn State. Furthermore, I can argue that you don't have more facts on your side, but I don't care to.
Just keep in mind, just because the words roll of your dick beaters, a fact it does not make them.

And just so you don't continue to piss and moan, here is an article I dug up which is pretty much a rewording of a majority of the articles I have read over the last year. The article isn't specific, I know, but it fails to suggest that he has stepped aside in any way shape or form.

    Jo-Pa Article 11/29/04

This clip found in a number of sites and article suggest he will ONLY go out doing things the way he always has...

He hasn't been at it this long to become a cardboard cut out of himself.
