Glory Road

If you like basketball and true stories, you'll love Glory Road. It's the true story of the 1966 Texas Western (now Univ. of Texas at El Paso) Miners who started five black players in an era when the NCAA had not broken the color barrier.

The team, led by head coach Don Haskins, faces many obstacles due to their color and overcome them as they continue to win. The team won 28 in a row before falling to Seattle Univ. (Now the Univ of Washington) in the season finale.

Jon Voight plays Adolph Rupp, who was the legendary head coach at Kentucky for many years, and was a staunch advocate of only white players. Led by All-American guard Louie Dampier and wing forward Pat Riley (Former LA Lakers head coach, now the head coach of the Miami Heat), the Wildcats were the #1 team in 1966.

That's all I'll tell right now (unless you already know the outcome)....But go see this movie, it was a great depiction of what happened then, and how a low budget college became the best in the land.

I liked the sequel, Glory Hole, till they trapped that poor monkey in there.

 

I've heard nothing but good about this movie from the people I know who have seen it. I figure I'm gonna drag Gottalaff's butt with me to see on my next trip south. Everyone says you have to stay through the closing credits though............
