Oh and 89 has no offset language so he'll be able to double dip.

I think you're right, which would explain the media saying it saved $2 million, since it technically would against 2014 without mentioning the huge hit on 2015.

Trying to keep track of the precise cap situation is mostly waste of time. At best, you can make a in-the-ballpark guess. Not only is nearly impossible for an outsider to fully understand the rules (I'm not even sure they're completely public), there's no way to know how a team is applying the loopholes and accounting tricks.

Well I think June 1st cuts push future bonus money onto the following season. So Steve's guaranteed $3 million (thanks Hurney) counts against 2014 regardless, and then the 2014 portion of the remaining bonus would count as well. That puts his 2014 cap hold at $5 million, which would be a $2 million savings over the $7 million cap hold from letting him play the season. Then the remaining $4 million in bonus would count against 2015.

So I guess I shouldn't have flipped out since $2 million is technically true, assuming he was designated a June 1st cut. The media just leaves out the part about it costing a lot in 2015 as well.

You ought to change your name to "Cassandra."

Her name means 'she who entangles men' in Greek. She had the power of prophecy and the curse of never being believed. A common version of her story is that Apollo gave her the power of prophecy in order to seduce her, and then cursed her when he failed.

Moot, but wasn't there some way we could have changed to deal so he takes a cut, plays in '14 and then splits. Retire or play elsewhere. He could have helped us this year and we made 12-4 so how broken was it?

You wouldn't even need to change the deal. If Smith played here in 2014 and then was released before the 2015 season, he'd cost exactly the same $4 million against the 2015 cap that he's going to cost now. Basically Dave Gettleman chose 2 million dollars over Steve Smith, which tells you what we've been saying all along about this having absolutely nothing to do with the money. It's about Gettleman swinging his dick around.
