When I took this position I knew that difficult decisions would have to be made along the way. To move on from a storied veteran player is probably the most difficult of all. A decision not to be taken lightly. However, after much thought I feel very strongly it's the right one.

I waited 30+ years for my chance to be a GM. I'm going to do whatever the hell I want. I feel very strongly that I should be the face of this franchise.

As I've stated many times, all decisions I make will be in the long-term best interest of the Carolina Panthers. Decisions, either popular or unpopular, have to be made for the greater good, and it is imperative to take an unemotional global view.

Like I said, I'm going to do whatever the fuck I please. You need to get over it because the decision has already been made.

Sometimes it may appear that short-term interests will suffer, and I can assure you we have no interest in taking a step back from our 2013 accomplishments. Nevertheless, like all NFL teams, we are in transition as we try to get into the best position going forward. When Mr. Richardson hired me I promised him that my goal would be to leave the Panthers in a better position than when I came. All my efforts are in that vein.

I can assure you that I'm great GM who built a 12-4 team from spare parts. I'll do it again this year. That's how awesome I am. When Richardson hired me, I decided I was going to do shit my way. And I know he won't fire me because he's a cheap fuck.

Over the next few months we will have the opportunities afforded by free agency and the college draft to improve our roster. We also have young players who will get an opportunity. I have great trust in our evaluation process.

************ there's plenty of time to patch together a 12-4 team. You don't think that's realistic? Oh...I didn't do that last year? Right. I'm sorry, you're clearly the expert.

Steve had a wonderful career with the Carolina Panthers. I truly wish him and his wife, Angie, all of God's blessings.

Steve is a ********** who was casting too large of a shadow for my liking. I hope he clocks his wife and it becomes a huge story, further validating my decision. I am God.

Plus, I've got the balls to not overpay free agents and aging players. Let 'em walk.

But it only saved 2 million while Godfrey is making 7 and sucks balls. I get the logic in not having him make 7 mil but I have yet to read where he refused a pay cut to stay. A distraction? N!gga please. Reduce his salary and have Rivera be man enough to bench his ass if he acts like a fool

Please stop saying this or I'm going to have an aneurysm.

CUTTING STEVE SMITH DID NOT "SAVE" 2 MILLION DOLLARS, IT ACTUALLY COST THE TEAM AN EXTRA 2 MILLION DOLLARS BECAUSE $3 MILLION OF HIS SALARY WAS GUARANTEED AND HE STILL HAD SIX MILLION IN BONUS LEFT, MAKING HIS CAP HIT $9 MILLION INSTEAD OF THE $7 MILLION IT WOULD HAVE BEEN.

No offense, Paul, but I've been seeing people repeat the false claim for days and it's obviously driving me crazy.

He was never asked to restructure. This was all about Gettleman wanting to get rid of Steve, not about how much he was making.

I was mildly upset when the rumors first broke about this shit. After seeing to actual numbers and realizing this is fucking costing us 2 mill this year.... Well that's what sent me over the edge.

It makes no GD sense to any sane person. Next year I don't think anyone would have lost their shit to the extent that we are seeing now. It still would be a sad day but a day everyone pretty much knew was coming when he signed that extension.

So cutting him erases whatever cap room we had left? What was it 7 mil before resigning anderson and bell/brochel?

It is awesome that we save so much cap in cutting Steve Smith. Good job Gettleman.

Well here's where it gets a little more complicated. If Steve's release was designated a June 1st cut then the cap hit is spread out over 2014 and 2015, which I'm guessing it was. I've read that doing so would create $1 million in cap space this season while pushing the rest against the 2015 cap.

I still don't fully understand how June 1st cuts work, but if it saved $1 million in 2014 then I assume it would have to cost $3 million against 2015.
