More political. The story is the characters, not magic, dragons, and all of that type of plot device stuff. Martin writes very deep and conflicted characters. There are no lilly white good guys or dark hearted evil types, just different motivations. Like AK said, the story is heavy with intrigue, desperation, backstabbing, power mongering, greed, envy, lust, lunacy, and all the other good, wholesome adult stuff.

    *SPOILER*

Your favorite characters are not safe. Martin loves killing them off and fucking them up. It's one of the best things about the series.

Try to stick with it past the first coupel of chapters/episodes, because it does start off in a kinda cliche fantasy manner. It gets much, much better as it goes along.

I never would have picked it up if it hadn't been for a former manager of mine at the bookstore. We'd be outside at the same time on a smoke break, & he'd be reading his book, cracking up now & then; or saying, "Oh, no!" Or groaning out loud. Or yelling, "Oh my God, I don't believe it!" Or just being quietly engrossed. And then just repeating on a regular basis, "This is awesome, I can't put it down!"

First of the series is A Game of Thrones.

I'd like to hear what you think when you get a few chapters into it. I don't think you'll be disappointed. And it really does keep getting better & better

OK, I'm in. Time to go shopping. I prefer the political / darker books to the pure fantasy stuff ...
AK, you have to read the first Dune sometime...( the others are ok, but the first is by far the best)...think Medieval Europe, but in Space, on a middle east planet, with giant man eating sandworms. There, that clears it up.

I'm almost fearful they are attempting this. The books are soooo complex yet perfect that I just don't see how they can do them justice.
