I started mine inside in February, had them outside in planters in late March, and had tomatoes in mid May.

That's what I did last year and the plants only produced a few smaller tomatoes. Guess I'll try again this year with a different type of tomato. I've had more luck with Romas than regular tomatoes in the past. No idea why.

Tomatoes are picky. Chip used a container growing system last year.

They need really good soil. If you can, add some bags of garden soil to the area you plant them. And some tobacco fertilizer. Almost any farm store will have it. Tractor Supply, Northern tools, etc. If you can't find that, use Rose fertilizer. They also need neutral soil. So lots of lime should be added now for it to be ready by April.

Thanks again. I put down some garden soil last year but I think you may of hit on the problem with the neutral soil part. I'm going to put down some lime this weekend.

Stanly county. We have a bit of a microzone out here that's unlike Charlotte. Our last frost is earlier than Charlotte. This past fall, we had our first frost in late November. There were several nights below freezing, but no frost. It's not always the cold that kills plants. My pineapple sage lived until almost Thanksgiving when the frost got it.

I've had a few things make it until November, but I rarely plant outside until May, it would be nice to have tomatoes in June. Imma try starting some plants now, just to see if I can do it. I usually just buy tomato plants from the greenhouse.
