South Carolina self-reports three possible NCAA violations

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The University of South Carolina reported three possible NCAA violations to the Southeastern Conference during the six-month period that ended June 30, an athletics department spokesman said Friday.

The school is waiting to hear from the league about the incidents "to determine what they are," spokesman Kerry Tharp said. The violations are expected to be secondary in nature.

The school's self-reported possible violations were released after a Freedom of Information request.

The first incident had previously been reported and involved a newspaper reporter from The (Orangeburg) Times and Democrat who was allowed to sit in on a Jan. 26 meeting between head football coach Lou Holtz and a recruit at Bamberg-Ehrhardt High.

A second incident involved a student-athlete who was taken to dinner by a former high school teacher. The teacher didn't think it was a violation to take the athlete to dinner because they had a "pre-existing relationship." But Tharp said the teacher needed to know the athlete prior to the 10th grade.

The third incident involved an equestrian coach having contact with a recruit Feb. 9, which was during a time when contact is prohibited.
