Me too. If I remember right, they were thinking about it anyway, but they were watching Chuck Smith to see if it was worth it.

I dont buy it. Jeffers knew what was going to happen. Why is this just coming out now? Maybe he keeping this info as a trump card in case he got cut.

Jeffers may or may not have grounds to sue the team. If the second surgery was done without the teams knowledge or approval, he can't go after the team. The doctor's license should be yanked and he should be sued if the article is correct. I'd say him getting paid for the better part of two years while not playing pretty much should rule out going after the team providing they weren't in on the surgery.

  4. Don't they have to reach an injury settlement to cut an injured player?

The doctor was an agent of the team. I don't know if that makes a difference, but I'd think it would.

I believe the doctor is no longer used by the Panthers. Same guy did Kasay, and Kasay was pissed about that kneecap exploding the next year.

  6. Agreed with Meat & TSchroll:
    1. The Dr. was hired by the Panthers, and was therefore an agent of the Panthers;
    2. If Pat was NOT aware of/approved the 2nd surgery, my focus would be on the Dr. first - after all his assets were exhausted, then the team - depending on the parting.
    3. If the Panthers discouraged Pat from getting a 2nd opinion, not good for the Panthers. I'd be surprised if they did that. Look at Rashard - how many opinions did he have?

Best conclusion: If Pat can't get with another team and play in the league, Jerry R. hires him for some management position - hopefully some community outreach role. Or, he's added to the Panther broadcasting team - and replaces Evil Horton...

Did a little quick research on Microfracture Surgery and uncovered the following. These clips have been taken from a number of articles.

"Microfracture is a surgical procedure aimed at cartilage regeneration. The arthroscopic technique involves clearing damaged tissue from the knee joint and creating tiny holes ("microfractures") in the bone area where the cartilage is defective. The underlying bone marrow seeps out through the holes and becomes part of a blood clot that forms over the area. The marrow contains stem cells, which have the ability to form replacement cartilage between the bare-bone surfaces of the knee. Appropriate rehabilitation of the knee after surgery is critical to the success of the operation. Continuous Passive Motion (CPM), where the knee is moved gently by a machine for 5-8 hours a day for several weeks, keeping weight off of the joint for a period of 6-8 weeks, and strict adherence to an aggressive physical therapy program following surgery all appear to enhance the success of the procedure.

"Microfracture has been successfully used to rehabilitate the knees of football folks like Bruce Smith, Dan Marino and Rod Woodson. Microfracture has also allowed Joe Montana to resume an active, normal life after limping away from the 49ers. In addition, weekend warriors have also had their active sports lives revived after microfracture.

"Jeffers underwent "microfracture" surgery on his left the same day doctors repaired that torn ACL in his right knee last August. Once considered a revolutionary procedure, "microfracture" surgery -- developed by Dr. J. Richard Steadman of the Steadman-Hawkins Foundation in Vail, Col. -- involves punching small holes in the bone underneath the knee cartilage near a joint surface injury in order to cause cartilage growth.

"However, the procedure seems to be falling out of favor, at least in NFL circles, after a handful of players -- including defensive linemen Eric Swann, Andre Wadsworth and Chuck Smith -- failed to rebound from the operation as expected. Swann has retired from the league; Wadsworth won't be ready to play until the second half of the season (if he plays at all); and Carolina released Smith this week (July 23) after the high-priced free agent acquisition failed a
    physical.

"And even after undergoing microfracture surgery, Jeffers is still bothered by a condition called chondromalacia, which has caused the cartilage between the back of his kneecap and his femur bone to erode away. "It's now bone on bone," Jeffers said Monday -- the day before doctors scoped his "good" knee - and when those bones rub together it causes the knee to get irritated. And that, in turn, causes inflammation."

It is important to note that Dr Steadman (the inventor of this method) performed the actual operations on Bruce Smith, Dan Marino and Rod Woodson. Makes you wonder if he was the only guy who could get it right.

guys, this has been going on for a long time. jeffers had to get released for them to finally talk about it. i just wonder what other "mistakes" the doctor made. check back and see who had surgeries and what athletes had injury problems.

I know Kasay was pissed off enough to scream at his doctor so loud that everyone in the building overheard. I know this was at Miller.
