Fun match-ups to watch this Sunday

Discussion in 'Carolina Panthers' started by Tiorted Snoil, Sep 12, 2002.

  1. MLB Dan Morgan vs FB Corey Schlessinger. If Alstott weren't in the NFC, Corey would have made the pro-bowl several times. Zach Thomas considers him the best FB in the league. It'll be fun to watch how Mogan handles him.

Panther WR's vs Lions Geriatric corners. None of the Panther receivers are considered speed burners which is good for Davis and Lyght who got victimized repeatably by the Phins receivers last week. Peete should be smart enough to not get tricked into bad throws which is a trait Davis is known for.

Detroit Lbs. They suck. Claiborne is re-learning the MLB position but is taking bad angles, picking the wrong gaps, and not shedding blockers.. Barret Green is fast but undersized and also takes the wrong angles. Brian Williams is coming off of a knee injury that forced him to miss all of camp and is rusty to say the least. This is basically his second game. Ricky Williams isn't known as an outside runner but he had good success against the Lions running outside and on screen passes.

Peppers vs Backus. Lions won't doubt Peppers, they think Backus can handle him.

Panther DBs vs Lion Receivers. Az-Hakim and Schroeder are both fast...faster than any Carolina DB. The question is, can McMahon throw it accurately.

Lions DL vs Panther OL. Luther Ellis likely won't play because of a thigh injury which is good news for the Panthers. Shaun Rogers led all NFL lineman in tackles last year as a rookie, who is going to block him? Porcher is steady against the run and pass...James Hall is a pass rusher and sucks agains the run. Edwards will play in passing situation somewhere on the line. We'll find out if Peete can still take a hit on Sunday....I think the Panther OL is going to have trouble with the front 4.

The way to attack Detroit is to attack the LBs on the outside with sweeps and screen passes....and short dump off routes over the middle.

If James Stewart plays, the Lions offense will be much better. With him playing they avergage just under 5 yards per carry, with him out, they have no running game.

If McMahon struggles, Morningwood will put in Harrington who can move the offense and score points but he'll throw some picks too.

McMahon is a scrambler and is actually more accurate throwing on the run than standing in the pocket. They'll call plays to his strenghts...rollouts and option QB runs.

Lamar Smith was the Dolphins RB in the game where the Lions came out flat...he ran all over them...then after the game Booby Ross quit.

They won't doubt him or double him??

If they don't double him, look for Julius to have a big game.

Otherwise, look for Rucker to kill in this game against Kerlin Blaise (who?).

Also, I would test them deep. Brian Walker and Corey Harris seem very shaky at S.
Todd Lyght and Eric Davis are also very shaky. Go get them throught the air this week.

I hope to see some turnovers due to a lot of pressure. Lets get in McMahon's head and see how he responds.

It hasn't been announced yet, but I'd expect Stockar McDougal to start...he has more talent than Blaise.

Beasley might have a thing or two to say about who the best FB is in the nation. I don't think you are going to have much success running. If anything has improved on this team over last year, it's that.

True. Smith runs a 4.3, but there's more to routes than speed. Still, the speed of your back 7 is your team weakness. We need to exploit that.

I've heard this often. Suprised by Clairborne struggling this much.

Rucker vs. Backus, you mean. Peppers takes on McFatboy. Advantage Panthers.

True. I don't know how fast Schoeder is, but he always seems to get open.

We shall see. Strength vs Strength. Your definate strength on D, the one solid unit we have on O. We will have to double Rodgers a bunch. Stuessie knows Ellis quite well.

We'll have to be disiplined in coverage. Make him run and beat our speed.

  5. Actually, the Lions safeties are not that bad...they both had great pre-seasons. Yeah, they didn't play well last week but a lot of that was the CBs and LBs fault. Last year they had Ron Rice and Kurt Schulz whom are both out of the league. Harris and Walker are very athletic and are solid...the problem is the CBs and the LBs in front of them. They are in a new D system and little Shottenheimer got schooled by Norv Turner.

I'm beginning to think Millen is creating a disaster. He complained at the end of last year that the team was too old and vowed to make it younger. On offense he's done that....but on D, tell me how all four starters in your secondary are over 30 years old makes a team younger?

The official game release has Backus at Left Tackel, and Peppers against a guy named Kerlin Blaise.

    Snoil - what's with this?

Fat boy McDougle is hurt (again), Kerlin is his backup. I guess TS thought Peppers was lining up as a weakside rusher.
