The book written about Permian High School's Football team is being made into a movie. It comes out in October. If the movie's as good as the book it should be pretty good. Did anybody else read it?

Me too. Most of the time football movies are disappointing because the people that make them don't know crap about the game or what goes on behind the scenes. They need to foolow the book and get a good consultant.

I heard about that. Great book...brought back some good memories. looking forward to the movie. saw where Billy Bob Thornton is playing Coach Gaines.

for those that liked Friday Night Lights, i would recommend The Bleachers but John Grisham. fictional story, but a great read.

I agree, great book about high school footbal in the state where football is a religion. Hopefully the movie will be as truthful as the book. I don't know if the Hollywood types will correctly portray the racial and socio-economic issues that the book brought up. Maybe the MOJO! can rub off on those idiots too.

Bleachers is a good one too. I could see it made into a movie one day.

a little more information on this project:

national release date is scheduled for October 15, 2004. Filiming was scheduled to wrap on April 14.

Tim McGraw is playing the part of Charlie Billingsly, the former all state Permian player whose son was a member on the 1988 team.

this finally got under way after severl attempts to shoot the film fell through in the 90's. some of the original budgets for this were in the $40 million range.

Author H.G. Bissenger wrote a small followup afterword in 1998 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the team. here is a link to the text:

yeah - I think this is gonna be a really good movie.

Of course I wonder how many sports cliches will be spouted before the movie is over.

and edit to add I never read the book so I think I'll wait til after the movie
