piper, i think you're right on that. think he looked real good in preseason and then had a strong game early but then disappeared for awhile. then came on strong in the last 4-5 games of the season. thought he made some comments about not taking care of himself (which i took to mean he was doing too much partying early in he year), which i liked that he would recognize, admit to, and fix. i could be wrong, but i thought i saw a lot of flash in the guy early on and will be disappointed if he doesn't turn out to be a real good one for a long time. never really noticed bukner much. is he solid?

well, I wasn't getting caustic, if I make fun of a 'writer' it'll be more obvious. But nah, not all that concerned with what's being said, as much as that he seems like the average person that doesn't know anything about the team.

Piper already made my other responsive point.

Buckner: Gilbert Lite. A bulked up one gap DT that can rush the passer a bit. Not as strong, or as fast or agile, but he'll make a play now and then. Not a great run defender, Gilbert has him beat there, as does Jenkins when motivated. Probably would suit him to slim down a bit. He's probably better suited as a situational pass rush DT rather than an all purpose DT.

He's cheap, so 4.5 sacks from him in split duty is getting our money's worth I guess.

true enough. And maybe we should keep him around next year as well. I'm not initially for that situation, though. Guess the expectation is that we'll draft DT first, and that we're better off making that player start ASAP

Won't see the field much lest an injury to Smith or Foster.

With Hoov and Mangum playing H-back, I think the need for a 3rd down back will be reduced.

Monty should get beat out by Brown. With Smith and Foster, Monty doesn't add as much to the mix as Brown would, IMO. Brown would be a different type of back in comparison, wher Monty is very similar to Smith in many respects, just not nearly as talented.

agree. Should we need a 3rd stringer that's a bruiser, then maybe Montgomery's the guy. Should we need a guy with varied ball skills, Brown's the guy. They're about the same level.

It depends on how we use Foster. Foster's the most talented in the passing game, and it might start out that Smith takes the run load and Foster's time is split between feature and 3rd down. If so, there's not much need for Brown after all.

Ah, so you're saying we draft DT first next year? That is a BOLD statement. I say if we have a year similiar to last year's, we're gonna be lookin in the direction of Mr. Leftwich.

i'm thinking that we have to look past this year when looking at the RB situation. folks are saying Smith is likely a one-year deal. if that's the case, who will become the primary back-up next year? brown didn't impress me much last year, so i'm thinking monty would be the top canidate. i'm thinking he will stick for this reason if nothing else. but apparently i'm much higher on this guy than most (all?).

somewhat foolish to even start guessing about next year's 1st pick. depends on a lot of different things and how different players play this year, injuries, our record, etc. We have question marks all over the field at this point. DT is an excellent guess, CB and WR are obvious concerns, QB could become priority if Weinke and F. don't impress, could use a dominating OT, may look to OLB if Naives gets hurt again and Witherspoon doesn't impress, if Foster can't hang on to the ball -- maybe RB? MLB, DE, TE and safeties at this point are probably not good canidates but severe injuries could change that. FB -- no chance.
