If the past was all that mattered Chuck Noll would still be coaching the Steelers. It boils down to wanting one of two things-contentment or consistency. Contentment allows you to live in the past and hope it'll repeat itself occasionally. Consistency means stringing winning seasons together. Fox has a career 48-41 regular season record in 5 1/2 years. Two of those years he was 11-5, the rest he's been at or below .500. We've regressed since the Super Bowl run and there's no way to get around it. Bad drafts, bad FA acquisitions, cutting guys who were still effective, keeping guys who weren't, stupid ass contracts, and ignoring problems that are ongoing while trying to spin it positively in the press with buzzwords like "core players" and the like. Like it or not, it may be time to blow things up and start over. Keeping things as is or thinking just tweeking a few things (see Henning, Dan) aren't going to solve the problem.

I'd be good with all of the above.

Which is fine, if that's what we want, but in the end we need someone other than coaches to make those decisions - who to pick, who to draft. Coaches should have input, and should be able to evaluate their squads, not be ultimately responsible. That cuts out a lot of staff evaluation, without a guy over the scouts to push for that opinion.

I agree with that. I don't know enough about the organization to know where the evaluation of talent has gone wrong but I can see the product on the field and who's not even making it on to the field and know that we're not drafting very well. Beason's a beast but otherwise we don't have a helluva lot to show for our last three drafts and we seem to have more misses than hits in free agency, too. I don't know if that's bad scouting. I don't know who hires the scouts or what the process is in selecting talent. I just know that it doesn't look very good.

Just a btw re drafting, *if* Jarrett and Kalil pan out we had a really good draft this year. New director of college scouting added, it may be that we've already fixed the reason for poor drafts.

I still believe in the DW pick, King is playing well for us and we hit on Marshall so that's not a horrible draft either.
