If you add Foster's fumbles in the preseason to the mix I bet that average gets much worse.

You're probably right -- especially if he ends up with something that takes him out for half the season or more.

To me - it's only the fumbles.

The only other person on the offense (maybe team) who's more of a playmaker than Foster is Smitty.

Smitty - as I recall - had the fumbles. He doesn't now (knock wood).

I think Foster needs reps. If he gets hurt - oh well. But I think the dude has ability.

RB's were a glut on the market this summer. Maybe Free Agency won't offer much. I'd like to TRY to have him be our feature back, or at least get the chance to try him.

    Smitty had one this year.

I like Foster a lot too and have noticed him guarding against dropping the ball this year. We ought to ride him a bit.

    Ability, yes. Durability, ?

Plus, he hasn't shown much in the way of consistency yet. Granted, the team hasn't really given him much of an opportunity to do so, but I just get the feeling he's not Fox's type of back. I think Foster would hit his peak as a WCO back, preferrably for an indoor team where he'd be on turf for most of the year.

Foster's positives - speed, explosiveness, strength, receiving ability
Davis' positives - strength, field vision, patience, decision making

Given their abilities at this point, I think the idea of using Foster as the main guy to cover the majority of the field and Davis as a red-zone/short yardage/end zone guy (ala Jerome Bettis) is dead on.

I've said it plenty of times: Foster gives defenses matchup problems on a long field that Davis doesn't (at least not anymore). I think his workload needs to increase significantly, and Davis - as much as I like him - needs to be a situational player.

By the way, everyone knows Steve Smith is our leading receiver. What some may not know is that the guy with the second most catches this season - despite being only a part time player - is DeShaun Foster.

And throwing in one final thought: The idea of a one-two combo of DeShaun Foster and Jamal Robertson in years to come sounds pretty good to me (we need to lock Foster up).

I was very critical of Foster coming into the season, but I said at training camp and continue to maintain that he looks like an entirely new runner. He's been more aggressive about cutting upfield, he isn't avoiding contact anymore, and he just looks like an NFL back for the first time. I'd definitely like to see him get more touches.

Actually I believe it was reported that we approached Foster's agent about an extension, but the team was told that he wasn't interested and would test the market in free agency.
