Also, while Foster is capable of breaking tackles (especially LBs and DBs in the open field), he hasn't shown the ability to run people over. Because of the closed-hole nature of short yardage and goal line runs, I'd agree that he isn't ideally suited for that. Neither was Davis initially, however, so if Foster could get better pad level, there's no reason he couldn't succeed at it.

I'm still thinking Foster should get the bulk of the carries.

If not for fumbles, I'd not be thinking, I'd be complaining.

He's had 1 fumble, on a pass play, in the last 2 years. Am I wrong?

    Foster 04-05 (9 games): 123 Touches (Rushing, Receiving, Returns), 1 Fumble, 1 Fumble Lost. Fumbles/Touch: .0081

    Davis 04-05 (7 games): 120 Touches, 1 Fumble, 0 Lost. Fumbles/Touch: .0083

However, in '03, Davis had 3 fumbles and Foster had 4 (incl. one he recovered himself). But Davis had 432 touches to Foster's 139.

    Career Fumbles/Touch - Foster: .0191. Davis: .0116.

Using career averages, and projecting touches/season from the past two years, we can expect Davis to have 274 touches and fumble 3 times this season and Foster to have 219 touches and fumble 4 times.

Using average fumbles/touch from the last two seasons, however, we can project Foster and Davis each to fumble twice.

I think Foster's gonna walk at the end of the season.

That's an interesting thought, since anyone that signs him would be signing for potential. Would he take that chance or stick around?

    When's Davis' last contract year?

RB Stephen Davis missed some practice time last week while being listed as probable on the injury report with a knee injury. Sources close to the Panthers say Davis’ surgically repaired knee is fine, but the Panthers have started limiting his practice minutes each week because they are concerned about overworking him. We hear that the Panthers are pleased with Davis’ production — 91 carries and seven rushing TDs in five games. They want to keep him healthy for the remainder of the season and hope reducing his load in practice and in games will help. Backup RB DeShaun Foster, who has averaged 11 touches per game, is slated to become more involved in the offense, especially when the Panthers are in the middle of the field. Foster is averaging 4.5 yards per carry and 15.7 yards per reception. He has 12 catches, which is the second-most on the team. We hear that Foster should start to get 15-18 touches per game, but Davis is still the starter and is still the team’s No. 1 option in short-yardage and goal-line situations.

He has to make it that far first, or no one will want him.

I don't know that the front office will give him the choice. It might come down (to some degree) to a choice between signing Witherspoon or Foster, and if it does, 'Spoon has far outproduced Foster with lots of upside still to be tapped. Not all of that is Deshaun's fault, but some of it is. His contract expires at the end of this season, as does 'Spoon's. No one's even hinted yet that Deshaun might be re-signed.
