Could be a sitar. if they're japanese it could also be a shamisen. that's the string instrument used in japanese classical music (you know that stacatto sound). also, the scales used by the japanese are pentatonic scales, generally. asian music in general tends toward this scale.

the japanese and guitar soloists, yes. I know a lot of guys who seem to have gone through their entire career not needing any other scales. Gotta freshen it up a bit.

Ha ha! That's very true. Pentatonic is a really easy way to cheat and make everything sound good. Effects pedals are another way. Oh, man, that cracked me up. Cheesy guitar-playing bastards!

I like flavoring with effects, but they shouldn't be a replacement for tone, attack, skill, etc, no.

Sure, a little envelope filter with some echo is nice.

I like a whole range to choose from, if possible. I like the clean overdriven, wet reverb sound of surf guitar all the way over to fuzzed, flanged alt grunge. Just depends on the tastefulness of the use.

But not as a cover up. Right now since I'm early in my own learning I only have a simple delay pedal, reverb's in the amp and use the pre on my amp for OD. I'll have more fun with the rest when I can use it better.

jazz. hiroshima is jazzy. they have a distinct fluid sound. like i said, that sitar is easy to detect. they use it not the way hindu sitarists would use the sitar.

anyhoo, listening to hiroshima would be better, c. listen to their stuff and you will know what i mean.
