    That experience may tinge my feelings on the subject but it does not define them. I do not hate gay people, despite what you may think. I do not oppose gay marriage based on hatred for gays. I might be alright with civil unions if it is not called a marriage and employers are not forced to recognize it as a marriage.

    And I will agree with you if you say that straight people are treated the same way.Marriage is a religious institution. Fine. Civil Unions are defined by the gov't as each state decides. Fine. Employers, I don't know how or why they offer benefits to spouses. I don't want special treatment. Just the same as everyone else. If you offer one thing to one group, offer it to all or none. It's that simple. Same reason I think hate crimes are bogus. If you killed someone, it's assumed that you did it for some reason, not always hate for who they were or are. Mudering a gay black man should not carry any more weight than murdering a white married guy with 7 kids, IMHFO.
