Do the whole yard, or it will detract buyers when you sell. If it is not a huge lot, do it yourself and save money...but be sure to rent a hydraulic auger (one of the ones attached to a small mini-digger type deal, or a tractor mounted one). In this clay, even the 2 man auger will beat you to death and rarely dig deep enough for your posts. Opt for the more expensive wire. It looks nicer and won't fray when you use the weedeater. I only had to set 12 posts and was really wishing I had a hydraulic auger.

If it's just for the dog, why not an underground/wireless fence?

    Hmmm...lots good points here.

The yard's not big ( 1/3 acre), but I'm not sure I trust those electric fences for dogs...do these work well ? Plus, it wouldn't keep anything OUT of the yard...

Trust me, do the whole yard. And i don't trust those electric either b/c any kind of animal can come into the yard.

I had mine done in chain link. I never had any problem with the fence itself.

Exactly!! I've always wondered what happens when some knuckleheads pit bull runs in your yard. Does the electric fence stop your dog from running from the threat?

Don't do chain link. Those are a fucking eye-sore and will kill you on resale...so will only doing half the yard.

Do the whole yard in split rail. They are easy to do yourself and don't need cement poured. Bring the linear footage to home depot and they will give you everything you need. Rent an auger and knock it out in a day.

I'm currently looking at houses. I look favorably on a house with a fenced back yard that doesn't suck.

I guess it sort of depends on your neighborhood. Chain link fits in some places and not in others. It did not hurt me when I sold my house but several houses in the neigborhood had it. I do not know how doing half the yard as far as resale but from a practical "live with it" angle it is better.

You might want to just think about getting a large dog lot and taking it with you when you sell.
