these are movies dealing with the subject of war. i'll throw some of my favorites out there:

birdy - matthew modene and nicholas cage were never more tested in their careers -- and never better, really. in the movie, they played childhood friends who each went to vietnam and are reunited in a VA hospital where modene (birdy) is going crazy. it's an intense film that puts you right inside the mind of a person going crazy and the struggle by cage to keep him in reality.

the dirty dozen - stallone? yawn. schwarzenegger? pussy. this is THE guys movie starring badass lee marvin, plotting ernest borgnine, macho charles bronson, studly jim brown, snooth john cassavetes, cool george kennedy, crafty donald sutherland, steely telly savalas and a bunch of other dudes! this was one of the first movies to show how some of the best soldiers are the nutjobs, that they HAVE to be nutjobs to pull off certain missions.

red dawn - WOLVERINES! charlie sheen, patrick swayze, jennifer gray, c. thomas howell, lea thompson and harry dean stanton star in a definite reagan-era cold-war movie about what would happen if the ruskies invaded the pacific norhtwest. our little band of future frat boys and sorority chicks turn into guerilla terrorists. yes, folks die in this one. war's like that.

the great escape - steve mcqueen, richard attenborough, james garner, charles bronson and donald pleasence -- woo! i love me some ensemble cast movies and this is one of the greatest. it's a man's film. there aren't any women to be found (until the end). this movie made me want to be stuck in a prison -- just so i could escape.

full metal jacket - stanley kubrick shows the dark side of war, from basic training to the battlefield. too many memorable quotes to list, but here's some: "Me so horny, me love you long time." and "You best unfuck yourself or else I will unscrew your head and shit down your neck!" and "What is your major malfunction numnuts?"

guns of naverone - nominated for seven academy awards, including best picture, this movie is an absolute adventure classic. interesting note: the directors originally wanted cary grant and alec guinnes, but "setteld" for gregory peck and keith mallory. also starrting are david iven and anthony quinn.

1941 - john belushi rules. many classic scenes. good, clean american humor. lots of fun.

in harm's way - john wayne and a hotheaded kirk douglas in a ww2 naval battle with the japanese. the multiple relationship storylines kept me hooked, as did the political struggles within the armed forces.

Full Metal Jacket - Kubrick is GOD

Band Of Brothers - I know it's not a "movie" in the technical sense, but hell it's still pretty good.

Apocalypse Now - The Horror! The Horror!

Lawrence of Arabia - I fuckin' love this movie!

Patton - George C. Scott, that says enough.

Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb - Kubrick is GOD, a great satire on the cold war, plus you can't beat Slim Pickens riding the bomb!

The Seven Samurai- Neck and neck with the Godfather for the greatest movie EVER made.
