External hard drive shit the bed

    External drives take a lot more abuse than internal drives, and tend to be cooled more poorly. They fail more. I use them as backup devices primarily - keeping any important data on a single hard drive is just asking for issues, especially so if it's an external...

    and it's a BACKUP of your music and photos, right? Cuz the ONLY thing on my PC that I consider valuable is my music and photos (and videos of the kids)...

    You'd think a Backup would be as reliable or, hopefully, more reliable than the machine's internal hardrive. I mean like, when your computer crashes and your Backup won't allow accessibility...That's depressing, kinda sucks.

    40% back up as my laptop hd is 150 gig, external is 250g i need a 1t hard drive for my music.

    photos are on t's laptop, her 100g external, plus she has a webbased storage for the printed ones.

    i need a terabite.

    Fortunately I've put most of my stuff(music books) on disk. fuck the external hardrive stuff

    to answer the question, tho, the drive itself might be okay, it could be the usb/firewire interface that's died. usually, these drives are just ordinary ide drives in a housing with some gadgetry to connect them externally.

    you could try popping it open and trying to install it internally (be mindful of jumpers) or even swap it into a different external case.

    pretty likely, tho, that it's just plain dead.
