I quit watching around the 70th minute to watch "Platoon" for the umpteenth time figuring it was over. I mean, who comes back from a 2 goal deficit with 20 minutes left?

Looking forward to today's matchup between Italy and France. Loser is out.

Either way, I'm afraid that whoever wins is just hanging on to old hope at this point. Right now, clearly the Dutch are the team to beat.

the red card on the French defender....mandatory for such a flagrant tackle in th ebox? Or could they have just slapped a yellow on mhim, since Italy got the PK anyway? Seemed a bit much (to take France to 10 players), rather than just hit them on the scoreboard alone. TEhe game was pretty much over at that point (down 1-0 and going 11 v 10)

That's generally an automatic red when you take someone down from behind like that with no attempt on the ball.

So the ref DOES have the discretion to just assess the PK (and a yellow), but that situation is generally Red with no discussion.

    10-4.

I'm mostly of German ancestry, so I have a couple of German jerseys too, and it was great to see them get a win yesterday against the pansy Portugese.

No, it's only an automatic red if you are the last man between him and the goal and you take him down in order to prevent the score. In other situations, depending on the level of violence, a take down from behind with no attempt to play the ball can run the gamut from no card, to a yellow, or to a red.

The Turks are freakishly good at scoring at the dying seconds. Croatia has to feel like they just had open heart surgery without anesthesia.
