New Orleans Hornets – This is what it has come to for the 2-26 Hornets. Jim Jackson, a career journeyman who was out of the league just three years ago, is refusing to report to the team after a recent trade with the Houston Rockets.

Jackson, who had a nice supporting role on the Rockets, won't be lured by talk of more minutes, more shots and the return of Baron Davis and Jamaal Magloire. He sees what everyone else in the league does too – a Haz-mat clean-up site that he wants no part of.

Owner George Shinn and GM Alan Bristow can wring their hands and try to convince all 12 season-ticket holders that they are trying to fix all of the leaks in the dam. But is there anyone in New Orleans who still doesn't believe the whole thing is going to burst this summer?

Trading for players like Jackson, Bostjan Nachbar and Dan Dickau are tantamount to sticking your finger in the cracks. What the Hornets really need is a new city, a new owner and new management by next season.

How's that for a tough New Year's resolution? St. Louis, Las Vegas, even Kansas City, would be a more basketball-friendly home for the franchise. To ensure that, however, someone other than Shinn needs to be writing the checks. The league let him move to New Orleans in part because the sweetheart lease Shinn got for the team made it virtually impossible for the team to fail financially.

Just a little over a year later, the team is talking of cutting payroll to survive. No one in New Orleans is interested and the players all want out. If there has ever been an owner who deserves to be fired its Shinn. He's screwed up in two no-lose situations. Goodbye.

Finally, the team needs management who can do more than add numbers and make trades. They need someone who can change to the culture of the franchise. No offense to Bristow, but his moves over the past six months haven't inspired much confidence in his vision for the team.

The Hornets need to both cut bait on the likes of Baron Davis and Jamaal Magloire and rebuild, or they need to add more veterans around them. Jackson may appear on the surface to be the right direction, but when you factor in that they let go Darrell Armstrong and David Wesley in the process – the team is running to stand still.

I read in the Raleigh News and Observer that Ray Wooldridge lied about the attendance during their last season in Charlotte and their first season in NOLA. He reported LESS for CLT and MORE for NOLA in their first season. He did this so he could get the support of the NBA owners.

This is why Shinn bought him out- the NBA made him leave!!!

I hope this fucker dies a long death. I'd like to see pain to him and his family...

It seems like the NBA is going down everywhere. Hopefully that will be the trend, the league will collapse, and we won't have to watch that awful form of basketball on TV and stick to college basketball. God the NBA sucks

Something that I agree with you on! That way we wouldn't lose players to the pros.

On the other hand, if there's no professional league for kids to dream about someday playing in, how many of the top athletes in junior high/high school would get into basketball in the first place?

I was wondering how the whole artest brawl thing would affect the NBA. For a long time that combined with the perception of decline in play and IMO an unwatchable style of play in the East would really start to tag the league.

It hasn't. Overall, ratings are up. Overall, attendance is up. So much for my theory.

Now, the Kobe/Shaq round 1 pulled a huge draw, so that may not be an accurate reflection overall. And at some point you figure attendance in New York, Philly, and Boston will wane after putting out that awful product.

Its different out west though. In places like Sacremento, their is no other game in town. Its like the NBA's Green Bay.

" a new city, a new owner, and new management". I wonder if those ignorant bastards in New Orleans would have sold their economic soul to the Devil (Shinn) to get the Hornets after knowing the disaster that would have followed a few years later? As stupid as those sons-of-bitches in nola are, they probably still would have. I remember several years ago, nola posters would come on the old Charlotte Observer Hornet board gloating that "they got our Hornets", like we really give a shit or something. We'd tell them how fucked-up Shinn was and they'd call us lyars and full of sour grapes. I wonder what they think now? I wish some of them would come around here now. Remember the cabdriver, cab594 or whatever? I wish that ************ would come back around now.
