Panthers | Some Emmitt Interest? - posted at KFFL

    January 24, 2003
-- The Star Telegram reports a source said the Carolina Panthers might be interested in acquiring Dallas Cowboys RB Emmitt Smith as their featured back. The Panthers, with plenty of cap space (about $10 million) do not know whether RB DeShaun Foster (torn cartilage in his left knee) is going to be able to play and are likely to cut RB Lamar Smith because of his off-field legal problems. The source said the Panthers have not had any contact with the Cowboys about receiving permission to negotiate with Smith. As noted earlier, Smith expects to return to Dallas.

I assume he makes a good deal of money so I'm not too crazy about trading for him. If he gets released and wants to come here for less money than I can live with that.

Yeah, X, Emmitt's due to make $9.8M this year, which is why they're considering cutting him. As far as I know, if you trade for a player, you have to absorb his contract, too. The only way he comes to Charlotte is if he's cut by Dallas.

    1. No I'm not kidding

2.Chronic quad problems? Emmitt has only missed 7 regular season games in his 13 year career. and started all 16 last season(and has probally played close a full seasons worth of playoff games)

3.Emmitt is 1 year older than Lamar Smith. Lamar avg'd 19 carries in each game he played for us and got 3.5 yards per. Emmitt avg'd 3.8 per carry this season in Dallas with a line that was injured all season and was at best equal to our line. I expect our O-line will be improved this offseason through the draft/FA. So If Emmitt takes Lamars spot and gets the same carries per game(19 carries per) for 16 games and averages a very realistic 3.8 yards per carry that would equal 1155 yards. I said between 1000-1200 so that's about right. If Emmitt would run for his career avg (4.2) with the same amount of carries that would give him 1276 yards. The Panthers single season rushing record is 1120 by Anthony Johnson- I really think Emmitt could come in and have the best season by a Panther RB ever(not saying much). Even at his age he's still a top 20 back in the league IMHO.

In trade, you assume his salary. His bonus money is no longer prorated and accalates to that year (or across the second year if after June).

Not so sure as Emmitt is a artificle turf player. We only play on that service 2-6 times a year. Veteran minimum and he has to agree to sign my football. :)

should emmitt be available for a decent price, the real value comes from his marketability. i think it undeniable that he wouldn't help boost ticket sells.

Cowboys | More On Emmitt - posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)
5:32 PT: Dallas Cowboys RB Emmitt Smith said on ESPN Thursday night that he did not believe a report in the Dallas Morning News that said he would no longer be the team's starting running back and would return next season only as a backup. Asked if he would be with the team next season, Smith said: "Yeah I'll be a Cowboy next year."

Emmitt taught Lamar everything he knows

I started a thread about this possibility probably 3 weeks ago at Char.com and it died a quick death. If Lamar did as well as he did (was doing) here then Emmitt would do AT LEAST as well. Lamar Smith is (was) a good running back but anyone can tell who he patterned his style after . . . the one and only BIG E. The patience, the sidestep and backstep out of would be tackles. Granted Lamar’s vision is his own but it’s not quite as good as Emmitts and the only edge that Lamar MIGHT have is a little bit of speed. I wonder if E will be capable of breaking anything much longer than 20 next year. Still, I would take him over Lamar and his pet booze-monkey.
Bring the man on - if he doesn’t cost too much.
