Unless the Panathers change their offensive line, and get some new receivers, Ragone isn't gonna cut it.

I don't want Palmer because he is a product of "Heisman hype" and we already got one of those.

I don't want Leftwhich because he is injury prone, fat and an IR looking for a home.

I am going to watch the Senior BOWL AND THE All=Star game to see if any of them are any good.........................

I would reall like to see the Panthers cut Peete and briing is PLUMMER, CRYDELL< OR AANOTHER VET.

Just a comment in passing the cookie jar......................

Palmer is a great name too.

....and Old Coot, I get your take on the Heisman, but this year is different. This is one of those years where the five Heisman canidates are most likely to go on to have HOF careers. The Heisman has never been about "most likely to succeed" honors, it's been about the "best player in college", but this year I think it applies to both. Palmer won that award without any preseason media hype. He won it soley on the field. That's huge. He's our guy. To me, if it doesn't look like we can get him, trade up. Palmer is ready to play right now, and he is the next QB to become one of the NFL's best.

Eli Manning can play though. As far as him being ready to play in the NFL, he may surprise us all. He's very smart. He may even become a better QB than Payton. So would I take Palmer in the first and Eli in say the third? I might.

Eli in the third???? He won't last that long.

He's a little bigger than his brother, frame wise, and got stronger this year. He's got a better heater than Peyton at the same point in his career. He's accurate, can throw the deep ball well, throws with touch, and can move around in the pocket.

He's not as far along as Peyton was at the same point, but that's partially indicative of his team, and I don't see him progressing with Ole Miss, unless they get some more talent.

The difference between him in Palmer is that you don't see Eli making those inaccurate throws and as many bad decisions, on a team with comparable little talent.

that's the thing though. Leftwich doesn't have any more talent than Ragone - save Watts, but overall it's relative - and Leftwich came through in big games, even hurt. Manning didn't have SEC level talent at a lot of spots and still did pretty much what he had to do. Ragone's got stats, one big win and nothing more.

Ragone's gutty and he tries his damndest but he's just not elite. It's okay, there's no shame in being 35th best. But he damn sure isn't 10th best. And he's going to have to have damn good workouts to beat naturally talented quarterbacks who haven't had the exposure he has. If the words about Ragone were unwarranted, I'd have easily said so. I do think he fits this system, I do think he's a good QB. But he's not our first round pick, hopefully.

    >>Also, I like Kyle Boller of California. If we don't get a QB in the first what would everyone think about getting him in the second?

I've been pimping Boller for months.

Ragone would be best served to get on a team like Green Bay or Tampa who will just sit him for a couple of years. Talent's all there.

Could see him falling there. If we take a receiver first, I'd rather him get taken by the playoff teams than Simms or Boller.

I'm sorry but when I saw him play against Marshall, Ragone was making poor throws and poor decisions even when he had time. He looked for all in the world like Weinke to me.
As to a qb in the second round, that might make some sense. I could get behind a Big tackle to replace Terry in the first and a skill position, wr or qb, in the second. I wonder if Banks would be worth our second Pick.

ragone's first pass bounced 10 yards in front of the receiver. leftwich's ball never came close to hitting anything but numbers on the chest -- especially in stride. i love a qb that can hit in stride.

coot, leftwich showed some serious guts. he's a student of the game and has excellent vision. not to mention a cannon.

I'm not really looking to defend Ragone all that much, because frankly I don't give a shit who the Panthers draft. I'm not a Panther fan. I'm just considering the entire picture. I've wondered quite a bit just how much of an effect the coach deciding to leave and then having the news break right before the game had on the L'ville team.

It's also worth noting that he was pretty close to John Unitas who keeled over in the middle of what turned out to be somwhat of a train wreck season for L'ville. I've seen him a lot the last two years. He has pluses and he has minuses, but I don't think I'd make snap judgements on him based on a single game where his entire team seemed like they were pretty much out to lunch or - as I also like to put it - phoning that shit in for a lame duck coach. They didn't even have 100 yards at halftime against a Marshall team that could not stop 11 of us. That suggests to me it was not just Ragone.

Mags - You mentioned the workout factor. I think the kid will do fine at the workouts. If he falls past round 3, I'd be on him like a cheap suit.

Finally I figure I'm in the minority here, but I'm not really impressed with any of these guys past Leftwich. Not enough to blow lots of $$$ and an early pick anyway. If I were y'all I'd pin my hopes elsewhere. I don't think y'all have to worry about Ragone being a Panther, although with the Panthers' history I can understand your concern.

i'd want leftwich if for nothing else than for him to become the greatest black quarterback in panthers history -- on draft day. :D
