E.J. Drayton, a 6-8 forward at Colby (KS) CC, made a verbal commitment to Charlotte during his official visit this weekend.

Drayton averaged a team-high 17.8 points and 7.6 rebounds as a freshman in 2002-03, leading Colby to the NJCAA Region VI semifinals and a 26-7 record. He was named Freshman-of-the-Year and was a First-Team selection in the Jayhawk Conference-West, First-Team All-Region VI, and honorable mention All-American. His shooting percentages were 49% from the field and 68% from the foul line.

Drayton enters this season as a First-Team preseason JUCO All-American by Street & Smith's (Tony Jimenez) and is ranked #1 among the nation's JUCO small forwards by NBADraft.net (Matthew Maurer), #5 by The Sporting News (Rick Ball) and #9 by Lindy's (Van Coleman).

The native of Charlotte (NC) picked the Niners over Iowa State while other schools showing interest were Florida, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Clemson, Texas A&M, North Carolina State, Syracuse, and Oregon.

The MOST AMAZING thing about the Drayton commitment was that it appeared to get more valuable ink (front page vs. page "whereever the Roy story was") than Roy Williams contract approval in today's Observer.

    Is Mike P on vacation this weekend? :) :) :) :) :)

It even appears to be prominent on the website.

bravo Obsever and Mike P. if I am gonna rail you when you screw us, I will solute you when you do it right. Thanks for several great stories last week. :) That is all we were asking for. I am sure all the normal 49er fans who aren't on these board enjoyed the midnight madness hype and Drayton stories, and I am sure future fans that don't follow the program YET got a nice read too.

I bet Drayton picked Charlotte because he read about them in the Observer.

After all thats the first thing a recruit looks at in a school.

wossa, it's likely Drayton did read about them in the Observer since he's originally from Charlotte.
