Because The Dead saw Dylan's writing skills. His lyrics are what made him famous, certainly not his voice or musical talent.
The Dead had a balance of all but didn't stand out for any, although I would say they were more popular in the grand scheme... JMO.

Dylan has never been a musician in any sense of the word; but he's a fuckin' brilliant poet...

    Untrue.

"Friend of the Devil" is a standard cover for Bob and his band on tour. and of course, Bob's shared the bill and sat in on plenty of sets with the dead.

Bob's good. A greatsongwriter, and an underrated vocalist when he was younger.

I'll say the Dead by a hair. Depends on what night it is.

But the Dead and Bob together is best.

I think your talkin about the wrong Dylan. Dylan the poet died, what, 200 years ago.

Bob Dylan may not have a schoolboy tenor, but his songs have great melody. And he has an uncanny ability to change the arrangement and chords to a song on the spot.

    He's a great musician.

    The Grateful Dead.

I had to add the Grateful part to distinguish from the current lineup touring as The Dead who kind of suck ass.

You talking 'bout the English poet Dylan Thomas(1914-53)?

Yes, Bob Dylan is much more of a poet than musician.
Although, he has the "makings" to be a great musician(improvisor), he ain't.
